Chapter 5: The Choice Left to Her

The next morning, Marjorie returned to the intersection.

A replacement dummy mirror had been placed beside the genuine traffic-safety mirror for the scheduled demonstration.

She stopped when she saw it.

For a moment, she simply stood there.

Daniel was nearby.

He watched as she looked at the new prop, then at the real mirror, and finally at the camera above them.

She had another chance to argue.

She could insist that the mirror was dangerous.

She could complain about the camera.

She could claim that everyone had misunderstood her.

Instead, she walked over to Daniel.

“I’ll pay for the damaged one.”

He nodded.

Neither of them celebrated the decision.

It wasn’t a victory.

It was simply the consequence she had finally accepted.

Marjorie looked toward the traffic mirror.

“I still don’t like it.”

“You don’t have to.”

That surprised her.

Daniel continued, “You just can’t destroy it because you don’t like it.”

Marjorie lowered her eyes.

For once, the distinction between those two things seemed clear.

She could disagree.

She could complain.

She could ask for a change.

But she could not make the decision herself by taking a mallet to whatever stood in her way.

Above them, the security camera remained fixed on the intersection.

Marjorie looked at it for several seconds.

Then she gave a small, frustrated shake of her head.

“I really thought nobody could see me.”

Daniel glanced upward.

“I know.”

She turned toward home.

The genuine traffic mirror reflected cars approaching the corner. The replacement dummy stood beside it, waiting for the safety demonstration.

Nothing about the intersection had changed because Marjorie had wanted it to.

The real mirror was still there.

The camera was still there.

And the consequences of what she had done were still hers.

This time, she walked away without touching either one.
