Chapter 2: The Camera

The police arrived within minutes.

Marjorie immediately tried to explain.

She said she had been concerned about neighborhood safety. She said the mirror had become a problem. She said she had acted because nobody seemed willing to listen.

The officers examined the scene.

The genuine traffic mirror was still securely mounted.

The broken dummy was scattered several feet away.

There was no confusion about which object Marjorie had struck.

One officer asked where the dummy mirror had come from. Daniel explained that it belonged to the neighborhood safety demonstration.

Marjorie folded her arms.

“It was in the way.”

Daniel looked at her.

“It was put there temporarily.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“You knew there were two mirrors.”

She said nothing.

Then the officer looked toward the security camera.

The footage was retrieved.

Marjorie’s face changed as soon as the recording began.

There she was walking toward the dummy mirror.

There she was looking around.

There she was raising the mallet.

The first strike.

The second strike.

The broken pieces falling to the pavement.

And then her triumphant step forward.

The officer paused the video.

Marjorie stared at the screen.

“That doesn’t show what happened before.”

“It shows what happened here,” the officer said.

She looked toward Daniel.

He was no longer arguing with her.

He didn’t need to.

The recording had removed the argument from the situation.

Marjorie had believed the quiet street meant she had found a private corner where nobody would challenge her.

Instead, the camera had given everyone a clear record.

She pointed toward it.

“You’re recording me?”

Daniel answered before the officer could.

“Yes. Every second of it.”

Marjorie’s voice rose.

“Then delete it.”

Daniel shook his head.

“It’s not mine to delete.”

That answer landed harder than she expected.

The evidence was no longer something she could control.

And neither was the consequence of what she had done.
