Chapter 1: The Broken Mirror

“THERE! NOW NOBODY CAN SEE ANYTHING!”

Marjorie Vance shouted as the lightweight mirror prop shattered across the pavement.

She stood beside the roadside pole gripping a soft theatrical mallet with both hands. Her emerald satin blouse and bright cobalt jacket looked almost absurd against the quiet American suburban intersection, but Marjorie was not interested in appearances. She was angry.

For weeks, she had complained about the genuine convex traffic-safety mirror mounted beside the residential street. She believed it gave drivers too much visibility around the corner and had become convinced that the neighborhood would be better without it.

That morning, the homeowners’ association had placed a separate theatrical dummy mirror nearby for a safety demonstration. It was clearly different from the real traffic mirror and designed to break safely into lightweight pieces.

Marjorie had decided to make her point.

She swung the mallet again.

The dummy mirror cracked with a sharp theatrical bang. On the second strike, it broke apart completely and dropped onto the pavement.

The real traffic mirror remained untouched on its pole.

Daniel Brooks, a neighbor in his early forties, had seen the entire thing from across the street.

He hurried toward her.

“Marjorie, what are you doing?”

She turned toward him, breathing hard.

“Removing the problem.”

Daniel looked from the broken prop to the genuine traffic mirror.

“You didn’t even hit the real mirror.”

Marjorie glanced toward it.

Her expression tightened.

“That thing is still dangerous.”

“It isn’t damaged.”

“That isn’t the point.”

Daniel pulled out his phone.

Marjorie’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling the police.”

She looked around the intersection.

There was almost nobody nearby.

No crowd.

No witnesses gathered along the sidewalk.

For a moment, her confidence returned.

Then she noticed something above them.

A roadside traffic/security camera was mounted on a pole overlooking the intersection.

Marjorie stared at it.

Daniel followed her gaze.

Neither spoke.

The camera had been there the entire time.

And it had not missed a thing.
