Chapter 2: The Camera Above the Door
Daniel did not call Karen’s bluff.
He called 911.
He kept his distance and described exactly what he had seen without adding anything he could not personally confirm.
A few minutes later, Officer Melissa Grant arrived.
Karen immediately took control of the conversation.
She pointed toward the broken door and insisted that Daniel had damaged it during an argument. She said he had become aggressive and that she had only picked up the umbrella because she felt threatened.
Daniel stood several feet away, saying almost nothing.
Officer Grant listened to both sides.
Then she noticed the camera.
It was small, mounted high beneath the patio roof.
“Is that yours?” she asked Karen.
Karen hesitated.
“It records the patio,” she finally said.
“Does it record continuously?”
Karen folded her arms.
“Usually.”
Officer Grant asked to see the footage.
Karen suddenly became less cooperative.
She claimed the camera had been malfunctioning for several days.
Daniel said nothing.
He had no idea whether the footage existed.
But he knew one thing.
He had seen the camera light blinking before the glass broke.
Officer Grant documented the damage and took photographs. She also recorded Daniel’s statement and asked Karen several times to explain precisely when Daniel had supposedly attacked her.
Her story shifted.
At first, she said he had struck the door.
Then she said he had threatened her.
Then she said he had moved toward her aggressively.
Daniel remained calm.
He had learned something years earlier that his father used to repeat whenever emotions ran high:
When the truth is on your side, you don’t need to make it louder.
Before leaving, Officer Grant told Karen that the camera footage would be important.
Karen watched her walk away.
Then she turned toward Daniel.
“This isn’t over.”
Daniel looked at the broken door.
“No,” he said quietly. “I don’t think it is.”
He was right.
The next morning, Daniel received a call from his employer.
Karen had filed a complaint claiming he had threatened her.
And attached to the complaint was a photograph of Daniel standing beside the shattered door.
The photograph made him look guilty.
But it wasn’t the whole picture.
