Chapter 1: The Sound of Shattering Glass

The patio umbrella struck the sliding glass door with a violent crack.

For half a second, everything seemed frozen.

Then the glass fractured outward in a web of jagged lines.

Karen stood in front of the damaged door, gripping the blue-and-white striped umbrella with both hands. She was a very heavyset woman in her late sixties, with short, messy gray-blonde hair and thick sunglasses that hid most of her eyes. Her bright red blouse, covered in orange-and-pink flowers, clashed with her vivid yellow pants and oversized pink cardigan.

She looked furious.

But the man rushing onto the patio looked even more shocked.

His name was Daniel Brooks, thirty-eight, a local contractor who had been called to the neighboring property earlier that afternoon. He had been walking back toward his truck when he heard the crash.

He stopped several feet away.

“Karen, what are you doing?”

She swung the umbrella toward him.

“You think you can destroy my property and just walk away?” she shouted. “Look at this door!”

Daniel stared at the shattered glass.

“I didn’t break your door—you did!”

Karen raised the umbrella again.

“Then prove it! Go ahead—call the police. Let’s see who they believe when I tell them you attacked me first!”

Daniel went silent.

Not because he was afraid of her.

Because he suddenly realized this was no longer an argument about a broken door.

Karen was preparing to turn what he had witnessed into something completely different.

And Daniel knew he needed to be very careful.

One wrong move could turn a witness into a suspect.

He slowly stepped backward and pulled out his phone.

Karen watched him.

For the first time, her expression changed.

She looked toward the shattered door.

Then toward Daniel.

And then toward the small security camera mounted beneath the patio roof.

Her face went still.
