Chapter 1: The Woman on the Hood

The ambulance was already braking when Karen jumped onto the hood of her silver SUV.

Its siren screamed down the quiet suburban street, red-and-white lights flashing against garage doors and trimmed hedges. But instead of moving her vehicle, Karen climbed higher, planted both feet wide across the hood, and threw her arms out as if she were guarding a border.

The ambulance stopped hard a few feet from her.

Karen slapped both palms against the metal.

“You’re NOT driving through!”

Inside the ambulance, the driver stared at her for half a second, apparently trying to understand what he was seeing.

Then the driver’s door opened.

Karen pointed through the windshield.

“This is MY space!”

An EMT in his early forties stepped down from the ambulance. His uniform was neat, his expression controlled, but the urgency in his movements was unmistakable.

“Ma’am, we have an emergency.”

Karen climbed off the hood, but instead of stepping aside, she planted herself directly in front of him.

“Then go around! You’re not blocking my driveway!”

The EMT looked toward the driveway.

It was completely clear.

His eyes returned to Karen.

“Your driveway is empty.”

That answer seemed to make her angrier.

“I don’t care! You’re moving when I say so!”

The street had suddenly become very still.

Behind half-closed curtains, neighbors watched.

A man across the street lowered his newspaper. An elderly woman standing beside her mailbox froze with one hand still gripping the lid.

The EMT glanced toward the ambulance.

Whatever emergency had brought the crew there was happening somewhere beyond the houses, out of sight.

Karen turned and climbed halfway onto her hood again, spreading her arms across the front of the SUV.

Then she looked back at the EMT.

“If someone dies, that’s not my problem!”

For a moment, nobody moved.

The EMT’s expression changed—not into anger, but into something colder and more serious.

He had heard the words.

And so had several people on the street.

Karen seemed to realize that only after the sentence had left her mouth.

Her eyes flickered.

She blinked twice.

But instead of backing down, she lifted her chin.

The ambulance remained trapped behind her SUV.

And somewhere nearby, someone was waiting for help.

What Karen did not know was that the emergency she was obstructing involved a person she had met before.

And by the end of the afternoon, the entire neighborhood would know exactly what she had done.
