Chapter 5: The Second Video

His daughter’s name was Emily.

She lived forty minutes away and usually called her father every evening.

When he told her what had happened, she was furious.

But he asked her not to turn his anger into hers.

“I got the controller back,” he said.

“That isn’t the point.”

“I know.”

Emily paused.

Her father had always valued independence.

Even after his mobility changed, he had insisted on handling his own shopping whenever possible.

He didn’t want his daughter following him around the store.

He didn’t want strangers grabbing his chair.

He didn’t want people speaking to him as though he were a child.

The controller incident had frightened him for another reason.

For several seconds, someone else had possessed the ability to determine whether he could move.

That was a feeling he never wanted again.

The supermarket manager later contacted him with additional information.

A second camera had captured something after Karen left.

Near the front doors, Karen had stopped beside another customer’s cart.

She had been talking to an older woman.

The conversation could not be heard.

But the gestures were clear.

Karen pointed toward the wheelchair.

Then toward the parking lot.

Then she mimicked a driving motion with her hands.

The other woman shook her head.

Karen walked away.

Michael explained that the store had reviewed the footage because they wanted to determine whether Karen had targeted the man deliberately.

They couldn’t establish a broader pattern.

But there was another important detail.

The man had not been blocking the aisle.

The camera angle showed a clear path beside him.

Karen could have passed without difficulty.

Emily listened quietly.

Then she asked her father what he wanted to do.

He thought about it.

Part of him wanted an apology.

Part of him wanted Karen to understand what she had actually done.

But he knew an apology couldn’t restore the few minutes when he had been unable to move.

Finally, he said something that surprised his daughter.

“I don’t want revenge.”

“What do you want?”

“I want her to understand.”

That answer eventually led to an unexpected meeting.

Not between the two of them alone.

The supermarket invited both parties to a private meeting with management.

Karen initially refused.

Then she changed her mind.

She arrived twenty minutes early.

She sat alone near the entrance, her bright clothes impossible to miss.

For once, she wasn’t smiling.
