Chapter 4: What the Camera Saw
The store manager, Michael, arrived several minutes later.
Karen immediately began explaining.
She described the elderly man as impatient.
She said he had blocked the aisle.
She said she had picked up the controller only because she wanted him to listen.
She insisted she had never intended to hurt anyone.
The man listened without interrupting.
Michael asked him what happened.
The answer took less than a minute.
He had stopped at the shelf.
Karen complained.
He told her there was room to pass.
She took the controller.
She refused to return it.
That was all.
Michael looked at Denise.
Then toward the ceiling.
There was a camera above the aisle.
Karen noticed it too.
Her expression changed.
Michael asked the security desk to review the footage.
Nobody spoke while they waited.
When the video appeared on the monitor, there was no ambiguity.
It showed the man’s hand leaving the controller.
It showed Karen looking around.
It showed her reaching forward.
It showed her taking the device.
It showed her placing it inside the orange handbag.
It showed her stepping backward when the man returned.
And it showed her shaking the bag while he asked for it back.
Karen stared at the screen.
Her face slowly lost its color.
The footage did not show a misunderstanding.
It showed a decision.
Michael turned off the monitor.
“I need to ask you to leave the store.”
Karen immediately objected.
“I didn’t hurt him.”
Michael nodded.
“No physical injury occurred.”
“So what’s the problem?”
“The problem is that you deliberately took property from another customer and refused to return it after he explained that he needed it for his mobility.”
Karen looked toward the elderly man.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
He wasn’t celebrating.
He wasn’t smiling.
He looked tired.
Michael continued.
“We’re documenting the incident. If you have any concerns about another customer’s behavior, you can speak to an employee. You cannot take their equipment.”
Karen’s shoulders stiffened.
She began to leave.
At the exit, she stopped.
She looked back.
The elderly man was still beside his wheelchair.
He was checking the controller connection.
Karen watched him for a long moment.
Then she walked away.
The man expected that to be the end.
It wasn’t.
Because the next morning, his daughter called him.
She had received a message from the supermarket.
There was something else on the security footage.
Something Karen had not noticed.
