Chapter 3: The Part the Camera Recorded

Daniel showed the officers the security-camera footage.

No one needed to interpret it.

Marjorie approached the wall.

She raised the mallet.

She struck the fake meter.

She struck it again.

The casing broke.

The pieces fell.

Then she stood over them.

The recording captured every movement clearly.

Officer James Carter watched the footage twice.

Officer Lena Ruiz looked at the broken prop.

“Was anything connected to the utility system?”

“No,” Daniel said. “The actual equipment is over there.”

He pointed to the separate installation.

It was undamaged.

Officer Ruiz examined the scene without touching the equipment.

“So the functioning utility equipment wasn’t struck.”

“No.”

Marjorie folded her arms.

“That matters.”

“It does,” Officer Carter said.

Her expression briefly brightened.

Then he continued.

“It also matters that you intentionally struck the other object.”

Her face tightened.

“It was a prop.”

“I understand.”

Marjorie looked at Daniel.

“You called the police over a piece of plastic?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I called because I didn’t know what you were going to do next.”

That silenced her.

He had not claimed that she damaged the electrical system.

He had not exaggerated what happened.

He had simply called for help after finding her striking something on the property with a mallet.

The distinction mattered.

Officer Carter asked Marjorie why she had done it.

She gave an angry explanation, insisting that she had wanted Daniel to take her seriously.

Daniel remained quiet.

When the officer asked whether Daniel had forced her to strike the prop, Marjorie hesitated.

“No.”

“Threatened you?”

“No.”

The answer came reluctantly.

But it was clear.

She had chosen to do it.

The camera had recorded the action.

Now her own words confirmed the choice.

Officer Carter told both neighbors to keep the dispute from escalating further.

The immediate danger had passed.

But the incident was no longer just an angry exchange between two people.

There was now a police report and a recording of what had happened.

Marjorie looked at the camera again.

She realized the footage would outlast the argument.
