Chapter 2: The Property Nobody Had Asked About

The officer who stayed behind was named Lauren Price.

She walked the length of the fence with Mara, examining the damaged section without touching it.

“Do you know him?” she asked.

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

That answer surprised the officer.

The man’s confidence had suggested familiarity. He had behaved less like a stranger who had made a mistake and more like someone who believed he was enforcing a right.

Mara explained what she knew.

The narrow strip beside her house had been used for years as a parking space and access path. It wasn’t large, but it mattered. Her late father had helped her repair the fence several times. The gate had always opened inward toward her property, and the boundary had been unchanged since before she bought the house.

She had never seen the man before.

Officer Price photographed the damaged post and the scattered hardware.

She also photographed the ground around the truck’s former position.

There were fresh tire marks.

Mara watched quietly.

“What happens now?” she asked.

The officer told her the immediate incident would be documented, but the property question was separate. If there was a disagreement about ownership or access, that would require records.

That night, Mara barely slept.

She kept thinking about the man’s certainty.

People became angry for all sorts of reasons. Pride. Embarrassment. Alcohol. Fear. But this had felt different.

He hadn’t said, I thought this was mine.

He had acted as though Mara was the one who didn’t understand.

The following morning, Mara found an envelope tucked beneath the edge of her front door.

Inside was a photocopy of a hand-drawn site plan.

There was no letter.

No name.

Just a thin black line running along the side of the house.

Mara stared at it for several seconds.

The line appeared to match the man’s argument.

According to the drawing, the narrow strip beside her house might not belong entirely to her.

She carried the paper to the kitchen table and spread out her father’s old documents.

There were property-tax receipts, insurance papers, repair invoices, and a worn folder containing the original closing documents from when she had purchased the house.

Nothing matched the drawing.

Mara called the county records office.

The clerk found the parcel but couldn’t settle the question over the phone.

There was an older survey on file.

It had been completed decades earlier.

Mara made an appointment to see it.

Before she left the house, she noticed something else.

The envelope had no postage.

Someone had placed it there personally.

She looked toward the side yard.

The damaged fence stood exactly as it had the night before.

But now Mara understood that the broken fence might not have been the beginning of the story.

It might have been the first visible sign of one that had already been unfolding without her knowledge.
