Chapter 2: The Room Nobody Could See From the Street
Daniel waited until the stranger’s footsteps disappeared beyond the driveway.
Only then did he move.
He closed the interior door and locked it.
The gesture felt almost ridiculous. This was his home. The same home where he had raised his daughter, Emily, where he and his wife, Margaret, had spent thirty-two years, where every creak in the floor had a memory attached to it.
But the stranger had changed something.
Daniel walked through the house slowly.
The kitchen was untouched. The living room looked exactly as it had that morning. Boxes were stacked along the hallway because Daniel had begun preparing for a move into a smaller place closer to Emily and her family.
Then he reached the back hallway.
There was a room at the end.
Margaret’s sewing room.
Daniel had not yet packed it.
He opened the door.
Nothing appeared disturbed.
Her old sewing machine sat beneath the window. Shelves held fabric, thread, photographs, and small wooden boxes. A faded measuring tape still hung from a hook on the wall.
Daniel stood there, uneasy.
The stranger had said, You haven’t moved that room yet.
How could he know?
From outside, the window was almost completely hidden by mature hedges. The garage-sale signs faced the street. Nothing about the room was visible from the driveway.
Daniel returned to the garage.
He found Emily’s number and called.
She answered on the fourth ring.
“Dad?”
Daniel explained what had happened.
There was a long pause.
“Did he give you his name?”
“No.”
“Did he say who supposedly gave him permission?”
“No.”
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“Then don’t let him back in.”
Daniel looked toward the driveway.
“I wasn’t planning to.”
He hung up and began examining the garage.
The stranger had arrived before most customers. Daniel remembered that now. He had appeared almost immediately after the garage door went up.
He hadn’t browsed.
He hadn’t asked prices.
He had walked directly toward the lamp.
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
Then he noticed something else.
The cardboard box where he had kept several old household documents was slightly open.
Daniel hadn’t touched it that morning.
He knelt beside it.
Inside were appliance manuals, old receipts, contractor invoices, and miscellaneous paperwork from years of home repairs.
Nothing obvious was missing.
But one envelope was turned upside down.
Daniel picked it up.
It was empty.
He didn’t remember putting an empty envelope there.
He stared at it for several seconds before realizing something uncomfortable.
The stranger might not have come to buy anything at all.
