Chapter 3: The Second Cable

The following afternoon, Daniel called the neighborhood association.

He expected a lecture about boundaries.

Instead, the property manager asked him to send photographs.

Daniel did.

The manager studied them and called back.

“There may be an electrical issue here.”

Daniel frowned.

“I haven’t touched anything.”

“Good. Don’t.”

That was all Daniel needed to hear.

He stayed away from the cables.

A licensed electrician was scheduled to inspect the outlet and confirm that Daniel’s house had not been altered.

While waiting, Daniel watched Karen from his kitchen window.

She seemed unusually busy.

She moved the portable appliance.

Then she moved the privacy screen.

Then she moved the outdoor mat.

At one point, she stood beside the second cable for nearly ten minutes, staring toward Daniel’s house.

She wasn’t acting like someone who had simply made an innocent mistake.

That evening, Emily returned.

Her father showed her the photographs.

She zoomed in on the second cable.

“Dad, don’t touch this.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Good.”

The next morning, the electrician arrived.

He examined Daniel’s exterior outlet, wiring, breaker panel, and visible electrical connections.

Everything on Daniel’s side was properly installed.

The electrician then examined the extension cord.

He explained that the first cable was simply a removable cord connected to the outdoor outlet.

There was nothing complicated about it.

But the second cable was different.

It was not connected to Daniel’s outlet.

Daniel stared at him.

“Then what is it connected to?”

The electrician couldn’t know without inspecting Karen’s property.

And he had no permission to do that.

That left one obvious question.

Why had Karen reacted so strongly when Daniel discovered it?

Later that afternoon, Daniel received a call from the neighborhood association.

They had spoken with Karen.

She insisted the second cable was “private business.”

She also claimed Daniel had deliberately endangered her when he disconnected the first cable.

Daniel calmly explained that he had removed his own extension cord.

The manager asked him to continue documenting everything and avoid physical confrontation.

Daniel agreed.

For the first time, the situation felt larger than a simple neighborhood argument.

And then something unexpected happened.

A neighbor named Frank called Daniel.

Frank lived three houses away.

He had noticed the same cable.

But he had noticed it months earlier.

Frank said he had assumed it belonged to Karen.

Then he added something that made Daniel sit down.

“I’ve seen her running it after dark.”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Where?”

“Toward the back of her property.”

“What’s back there?”

Frank hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Neither man spoke for a moment.

Then Frank said quietly, “But she doesn’t usually want anybody looking back there.”
