Chapter 1: The Barrier

Karen jerked the metal access barrier sideways with both hands.

The steel feet scraped hard across the pavement, making a harsh sound that carried down the quiet suburban road. Behind the barrier stood a clearly marked entrance to the protected forest, the sign above it reading PROTECTED FOREST — NO FIRE.

A thin veil of smoke hung beyond the trees.

Karen did not seem concerned about the smoke.

She was concerned about the man standing several feet away.

“DON’T YOU TOUCH THAT—MOVE!”

Her voice cut through the afternoon air.

The Neighbor stepped toward the barrier, one hand extended.

“You’re the one blocking it.”

Karen released one hand from the barrier and pointed at him.

“I’m blocking you from making a scene!”

He looked past her toward the entrance.

“You moved the only marked access.”

For the first time, Karen glanced down.

The barrier had been dragged directly across a small emergency-access marker painted on the pavement.

Her expression changed for less than a second.

Then the anger returned.

“That doesn’t mean what you think it means.”

She grabbed the barrier again.

The Neighbor stepped around it and planted one boot against its base.

“Then stop moving it.”

Karen froze.

A distant emergency vehicle passed behind the trees, its lights sweeping briefly across the road.

She stared at him.

“You’re not getting me to admit to something I didn’t do.”

The Neighbor did not answer.

Instead, he pulled a folded document from the inside pocket of his work jacket.

Karen’s eyes immediately went to it.

The paper was old, creased at the edges, and laminated.

He held it up without stepping closer.

“I’m not asking you to admit anything.”

Karen’s expression tightened.

“What is that?”

“My access authorization.”

She laughed once.

“You don’t have authorization.”

He turned the document around.

His name appeared beside the protected-area access designation.

Karen stared at it.

The barrier was still beneath her hands.

The Neighbor continued, calmly now.

“And that entrance isn’t yours to control.”

Karen looked toward the forest.

Then back at the document.

For several seconds, neither moved.

The emergency lights disappeared behind the trees.

But the barrier remained exactly where Karen had put it.

And now the question was no longer whether the Neighbor could enter.

It was whether Karen had any authority to keep him out.
