Chapter 7: The New Rule
Weeks later, Walter’s house was still being repaired.
The kitchen had been gutted.
The smoke damage was slowly disappearing.
A new smoke detector had been installed in every bedroom.
And Gloria had become a familiar sight on the block for an entirely different reason.
She brought groceries to Walter.
She checked on an elderly neighbor during a heat wave.
She even attended a community meeting.
She did not bring her megaphone.
When the meeting turned to emergency access, Gloria raised her hand.
A neighbor recognized her.
“You’re not going to start issuing traffic orders again, are you?”
Laughter filled the room.
Gloria smiled.
“No.”
She paused.
“Apparently, fire trucks are allowed to park wherever they need to.”
Another laugh.
She looked down at her hands.
“I learned something.”
The room quieted.
“You can care about your neighborhood without being in charge of everybody in it.”
Marcus, sitting near the back, heard the words.
He nodded once.
After the meeting, Gloria walked outside.
A fire engine passed slowly down the street on its way to another call.
She watched it disappear around the corner.
For a second, her hand reached toward the turquoise handbag where the red megaphone used to be.
Then she stopped.
She smiled.
And kept walking.
Behind her, Walter stood on his repaired porch.
“Gloria!”
She turned.
He held up a small package.
“What is that?”
“A new smoke detector.”
She laughed.
“Good.”
Walter grinned.
“You want to install it?”
Gloria looked at the house.
Then at him.
“No.”
Walter raised an eyebrow.
Gloria smiled.
“I don’t work for the fire department.”
This time, everyone laughed.
And the street finally belonged to the people who lived there—not to whoever could shout the loudest.
