Chapter 7: The Chair Beside the Window
Six months later, Richard returned to the hospital for another appointment.
His knee was better.
He still used his cane.
But now he walked with more confidence.
The waiting room had changed.
There were more chairs.
A clearly marked accessible seating area.
A small sign reminding visitors not to reserve seats with personal belongings.
And beside the window stood one particular chair.
Richard recognized it immediately.
He sat down.
A few minutes later, a nervous-looking man entered with a walker.
He looked around.
Most chairs were occupied.
Richard noticed an empty seat beside him.
Before the man could ask, Richard moved his cane.
“Here.”
The man smiled.
“Thank you.”
Richard nodded.
Across the room, Karen was standing near the reception desk.
She had come with David for a follow-up appointment.
David now walked slowly with a cane of his own.
Karen saw Richard.
Their eyes met.
She smiled.
Richard smiled back.
There was no need to mention the argument.
No need to revisit the handbag.
No need to pretend the morning had never happened.
It had happened.
And it had changed both of them.
Karen walked over.
“How’s the knee?”
“Better.”
“And the cane?”
“Still here.”
She laughed.
David arrived beside her.
“You two still arguing about chairs?”
Richard shook his head.
“Not anymore.”
Karen looked toward the man using the walker.
“He got there first.”
Richard smiled.
“No. He needed it.”
Karen paused.
Then nodded.
“Sometimes that’s more important.”
A nurse called David’s name.
He and Karen turned toward the hallway.
Before leaving, Karen looked back at Richard.
“Thank you.”
Richard knew she wasn’t talking about the chair.
She was talking about everything that had followed it.
The paperwork.
The surgery.
The fear.
The rehabilitation.
The changes at home.
The difficult decision to accept help.
And perhaps most of all, the lesson neither of them had expected to learn in a hospital waiting room:
A seat was only a seat.
But the way people treated one another while deciding who deserved it could reveal everything.
Richard watched Karen disappear down the hallway beside her husband.
Then he looked at the man sitting beside him.
The man adjusted his walker and sighed with relief.
Richard leaned back.
For the first time in a long time, the waiting room did not feel like a place where people were simply waiting for bad news.
It felt like a place where strangers could still make room for one another.
And sometimes, that small act of making room was where dignity began.
