Chapter 5: The Decision Waiting Upstairs
David spent the next several days recovering.
The surgery had stabilized him, but he was weak.
The medical team began discussing rehabilitation.
Karen immediately resisted.
“He needs to come home.”
The rehabilitation specialist explained that David would need help walking, medication management, and assistance with daily tasks.
Karen insisted she could handle it.
“I’ve been taking care of him for months.”
Richard heard the conversation from the hallway.
He did not interfere.
This was Karen’s decision.
But later, he found her sitting alone.
“You heard that?”
“Yes.”
She looked exhausted.
“They think I can’t take care of my own husband.”
Richard sat beside her.
“They think you shouldn’t have to do it alone.”
Karen looked at him.
There was a long silence.
Then she admitted something she had not told anyone.
She had fallen twice at home while trying to help David.
Once, she had nearly dropped him while transferring him from the bed.
She had hidden both incidents.
“I was afraid they’d say I couldn’t handle it.”
Richard nodded.
“That sounds familiar.”
Karen gave him a tired smile.
“You?”
“I once spent six months pretending I didn’t need a cane.”
She laughed.
“So we’re both stubborn.”
“Apparently.”
The rehabilitation specialist later gave Karen two choices: bring David home immediately with limited support, or allow him to spend time in rehabilitation while arrangements were made for home care.
Karen wanted home.
But she also remembered the fear on Richard’s face when he had stood beside that chair.
Not fear of Karen.
Fear of falling.
She finally understood something.
A person could protect someone they loved without pretending they could control everything.
Karen agreed to rehabilitation.
It was the first major decision she had made since arriving at the hospital that did not come from panic.
A week later, David was transferred to rehabilitation.
Karen returned to the waiting room to collect the belongings she had left there.
She carried the same electric-orange handbag.
But this time she did something different.
She walked past the chairs.
Then stopped.
An elderly woman stood nearby, looking around for somewhere to sit.
Karen looked at the empty chair beside her.
She picked up her bag.
“Here,” she said.
The woman hesitated.
Karen moved the bag onto her lap.
“You can sit.”
The woman thanked her.
Karen nodded.
It was a small thing.
But for Karen, it was enormous.
Then she noticed something taped to the wall beside the reception desk.
A new sign had been posted.
“Please do not reserve waiting-room seating with personal belongings. Priority seating is available for patients who need additional assistance.”
Karen stared at it.
She knew exactly why it was there.
She expected to feel embarrassed.
Instead, she felt something else.
Responsibility.
She walked to the reception desk.
“Did you put that sign up because of me?”
The receptionist looked uncomfortable.
“It was part of a broader update.”
Karen nodded.
“I understand.”
Then she pulled out her phone.
“I’d like to ask how I can help pay for additional chairs.”
The receptionist looked surprised.
Karen had already made up her mind.
If she had learned anything in that room, it was that dignity was not protected by claiming more space.
Sometimes it was protected by making room.
But another problem was waiting for her at home.
And this time, she could not solve it with a handbag, an argument, or control.
