Chapter 4: What the Records Showed

The property records settled the most important question.

The driveway belonged to the house.

There was no document giving the woman authority to decide who could park there.

She read the information twice.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“That doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want.”

“No,” he said. “It means you can’t either.”

She looked away.

For the first time since the confrontation began, she had no accusation ready.

The anger remained, but it no longer had the same foundation.

Daniel could have ended the conversation there.

Instead, he asked why the driveway mattered so much to her.

She hesitated.

Then she explained that she had treated the area as part of her neighborhood routine for years. She believed people knew the driveway was supposed to remain available in a particular way, and she had gradually turned that expectation into something she considered a right.

It was not the same thing.

Daniel understood the difference now.

She had not simply been confused about where the driveway was.

She had confused familiarity with authority.

That mistake had turned an ordinary parked SUV into a confrontation.

“I should have asked,” she admitted.

Daniel nodded.

“You should have.”

There was no dramatic reconciliation.

No sudden friendship.

Just an acknowledgment of what had actually happened.

The driveway remained Daniel’s place to use.

The woman could dislike his decision.

She could question it.

But she could no longer honestly claim ownership over it.

The practical dispute was nearly finished.

The remaining question was whether either of them would carry the anger forward.
