Chapter 6: The Problem Nobody Had Seen
The charging station had been malfunctioning intermittently for weeks.
Not electrically.
Administratively.
The station’s signage was outdated.
One sign showed compatibility information that no longer matched the charging network’s current connector configuration.
Susan had assumed customers could figure it out through the screen.
They couldn’t.
Karen’s behavior had been unreasonable.
But the confusion surrounding the station had created an opportunity for exactly this kind of conflict.
Susan showed David several previous complaints.
Customers had reported incompatible connectors.
Drivers had parked in the wrong spaces.
One customer had waited nearly twenty minutes before discovering the station couldn’t serve his vehicle.
Susan rubbed her forehead.
“We should have replaced the sign weeks ago.”
David looked at the complaints.
“So this could happen again.”
“Yes.”
Susan nodded.
“Unless we fix it.”
That was the part David remembered.
Karen’s decision had been wrong.
But the situation had exposed a problem that everyone else had simply worked around.
The next morning, Susan ordered new signage.
Clear connector illustrations.
Large compatibility information.
A notice explaining that a vehicle could not reserve or occupy a charger it could not use.
The shopping center also changed its security procedure.
No more arguments over who arrived first.
The rule became simple:
A charger is available to the vehicle actively using a compatible connection.
If the vehicle cannot connect, the space must be freed for the next compatible vehicle.
It was a small change.
But it mattered.
Two days later, David received a call from Susan.
She told him the charging station was operating normally.
The new signs were installed.
The complaints had stopped.
Then she mentioned Karen.
“She came back.”
David sighed.
“Of course she did.”
Susan laughed softly.
“She didn’t cause a scene.”
That surprised him.
“She asked where the compatible charger was.”
“And?”
“She used it.”
David smiled.
“Good.”
Susan hesitated.
“She also asked me to give you something.”
The next afternoon, David found a small envelope waiting at the management office.
Inside was a handwritten note.
There was no apology for the shouting.
No excuse.
Just one sentence.
“I thought being first meant I couldn’t be asked to move.”
David read it twice.
Then he folded the note.
He didn’t need Karen to become his friend.
He didn’t need her to admit everything.
He simply appreciated that she had understood something.
Respect was not about getting your way.
It was about recognizing that other people had a right to exist in the same space.
David returned home that evening.
Linda was sitting at the kitchen table.
“You’re late,” she said.
“Charging station.”
She smiled.
“Another problem?”
David set his keys down.
“Actually, they fixed it.”
Linda looked at him.
“What changed?”
David thought about the line of cars.
The red error message.
Karen standing in front of the charger.
The older couple.
The new signs.
“The rules became clearer.”
Linda nodded.
“Sometimes that’s all it takes.”
David smiled.
But he didn’t tell her the entire story.
He didn’t need to.
Because the next time he drove past the shopping center, he noticed something he hadn’t expected.
The charging station had a new sign.
And beneath it was a short sentence:
“SHARING THE CHARGER MEANS EVERYONE GETS HOME.”
