Chapter 5: The Evidence in the Charger Log

Susan contacted the charging network’s support line.

The charger stored every attempted connection.

That detail mattered.

While Mike kept the line organized, Susan reviewed the station’s activity history.

There were several failed connection attempts from Karen’s vehicle.

No completed charging session.

No energy delivered.

No valid connection.

Only repeated failed attempts.

Susan turned the tablet toward Karen.

“This station shows zero charging activity from your vehicle.”

Karen stared at the screen.

“I told you the machine was broken.”

Susan shook her head.

“The machine isn’t broken.”

She pointed to the record.

“Another vehicle used this same connector earlier today.”

Karen had no immediate answer.

David looked at the screen from a distance.

He wasn’t interested in humiliating her.

He simply wanted the charger.

Susan continued.

“The system is working. Your connector isn’t compatible.”

Karen stepped out of the SUV.

“You’re making me look stupid.”

Susan answered carefully.

“I’m trying to help you leave this situation without making it worse.”

Karen’s eyes narrowed.

“You think you’re better than me?”

“No.”

“You think everybody here is better than me?”

“No.”

“Then why are you all treating me like I’m some kind of criminal?”

David finally spoke.

“Nobody is.”

Karen turned toward him.

“You’ve been against me from the beginning.”

David shook his head.

“I’ve been waiting for a charger.”

The simplicity of the answer silenced her.

David looked at the older couple.

Then at the other cars.

“We’ve all been waiting.”

Karen looked down the line.

Six vehicles.

Six sets of headlights.

Six people who had nothing to do with her.

And yet all of them had been affected by one decision.

Susan spoke again.

“Please move to the compatible station.”

Karen didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked back toward her SUV.

David expected another argument.

Instead, Karen stopped.

She looked at the older couple.

The woman was still holding the oxygen equipment.

The older man looked exhausted.

Karen’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough for David to notice.

She turned back to Susan.

“Where did you say the other charger was?”

“About a mile away.”

Karen nodded.

Then she got into her SUV.

This time, she drove away.

The line finally moved.

David pulled into the charging space.

The connector clicked into his car.

The screen changed from red to green.

CHARGING.

A quiet sound.

Almost insignificant.

But David felt his shoulders drop.

For the first time in nearly an hour, he could breathe.

The older man behind him waved.

David waved back.

The crisis seemed over.

Then David’s phone buzzed.

It was a message from Susan.

“David, can you come inside the management office before you leave?”

He frowned.

He unplugged his car temporarily and walked inside.

Susan was waiting with Mike.

On the desk sat Karen’s printed vehicle documents.

Susan looked serious.

“We found something you need to know.”

David sat down.

Susan turned the tablet around.

It wasn’t about Karen anymore.

It was about the charging station.

And the reason this particular station had become so difficult to use.
