Chapter 3: The Explanation Changes

Marjorie followed Daniel into the school office, but she did not sit down.

Linda stood beside the security monitor.

The footage was still paused on the moment Marjorie placed the snake beside the SUV.

Marjorie stared at it.

Then she crossed her arms.

“I was testing security.”

Linda kept her voice calm.

“Were you authorized to conduct a security test?”

Marjorie hesitated.

“I was checking whether anyone would notice.”

“That isn’t what you told Officer Reed.”

Marjorie’s eyes narrowed.

“I was trying to make a point.”

Daniel remained near the door.

“You told me someone had deliberately placed a dangerous object beside your vehicle.”

“I said it might be dangerous.”

“You also told me nobody should approach the area.”

“Because I wanted people to take security seriously.”

Linda turned off the monitor.

“That isn’t how school security works.”

Marjorie looked from Linda to Daniel.

She had entered the office expecting to explain what everyone else had failed to understand.

Instead, she was being asked to explain why she had created the very situation she claimed to fear.

“I’ve seen people ignore things around here,” she said.

“That may be a legitimate concern,” Linda replied. “But you cannot manufacture an emergency to test whether staff respond correctly.”

Marjorie shook her head.

“I was trying to help.”

“Then report a concern,” Linda said. “Don’t create one.”

That distinction left Marjorie visibly unsettled.

She had no authority to conduct security checks at the school. She had not been asked to run a drill. She had not reported a suspicious object that someone else had placed there.

She had placed it there herself.

Daniel opened the office door.

“For now, I need you to remain outside the marked security area while the school finishes documenting what happened.”

Marjorie looked offended.

“You’re treating me like I did something wrong.”

Linda answered quietly.

“You created a false emergency on school property. We have to treat that seriously.”

Marjorie looked once more toward the monitor.

The footage had not misunderstood her.

It had simply recorded what she had done.

She picked up her purse and walked out.

But the incident was not finished.

The school now had to decide what boundaries would apply to her the next time she claimed she was protecting the campus.
