Chapter 2: The Reason Karen Had Been There
The protected forest had always been a point of tension in the neighborhood.
Residents were allowed to walk along the marked public boundary, but entering the protected area was prohibited. After several dry summers, the county had become especially strict about fire restrictions.
Karen knew those rules.
She also knew exactly how suspicious her appearance near the entrance looked.
That was why she had initially refused to explain herself.
Daniel interpreted her silence as guilt.
Karen interpreted his accusation as an invasion of her privacy.
Neither trusted the other enough to listen.
Linda Hayes, however, had no interest in neighborhood history.
She wanted facts.
She asked Karen to explain why she had been near the forest.
Karen finally said she had gone there because she had received a call from her granddaughter, Emily.
Emily had been walking along the public trail earlier that afternoon.
She had dropped her phone somewhere near the entrance.
Karen had driven over to help look for it.
That was all.
Or at least, that was what Karen claimed.
Daniel didn’t respond.
Instead, he asked Linda to look at the footage again.
The image showed Karen near the entrance.
But it didn’t show what she had done there.
Linda paused the video.
Karen was standing beside the trail sign.
She appeared to look toward the trees.
Then she walked out of frame.
There was no visible fire.
No accelerant.
No damaged equipment.
Nothing showing her causing the smoke.
Still, Daniel wasn’t satisfied.
“You were there before the emergency crews arrived.”
Karen folded her arms.
“So were you.”
“I was called because someone reported smoke.”
“And I was called because my granddaughter lost her phone.”
The two explanations could both be true.
That was the problem.
Linda asked Karen whether Emily could confirm the story.
Karen’s expression tightened.
“She wasn’t with me.”
“Then who was?”
Karen looked away.
She didn’t answer immediately.
Daniel noticed.
So did Linda.
Finally, Karen said she had been alone.
The conversation ended without an accusation being formally made.
But the situation had already spread beyond the three people standing there.
By sunset, neighbors were exchanging messages about Karen being “caught on camera near the forest.”
Someone posted a blurry screenshot from Daniel’s phone in the neighborhood group.
The caption read:
“Does anyone know what happened here?”
Within minutes, speculation replaced facts.
Karen saw the post from her kitchen.
Her hands trembled.
She was angry, but underneath the anger was something else.
Fear.
Not fear of being arrested.
Fear that people she had lived beside for years would decide who she was based on a thirty-second clip.
She closed the phone.
Then remembered something.
When she had helped search for Emily’s missing phone, she had noticed something unusual near the entrance.
A county maintenance truck had been parked beside the service gate.
And the driver had been talking to someone.
Karen had ignored it at the time.
Now she wondered whether that detail mattered.
She called Emily.
The girl answered immediately.
“Grandma, did you find it?”
“No.”
Karen looked toward the dark forest beyond her window.
“But I need you to tell me exactly where you were walking today.”
Emily went silent.
Then she said something that made Karen sit down.
“I wasn’t alone.”
