Chapter 5: What Karen Had Been Planning
The truth emerged through an unexpected source.
Karen’s neighbor, Susan, came to Paul privately.
Susan had been uncomfortable for months.
Karen had repeatedly talked about “taking back control” of the common areas.
She believed residents were becoming too dependent on accommodations.
She had proposed changing the gate schedule so that it would remain closed during certain hours.
When the board rejected the proposal, Karen became angry.
But Susan had something more important.
A photograph.
It showed a printed list Karen had created.
At the top were several names.
Walter’s was one of them.
Next to each name were notes about when each resident used the pedestrian gate.
Some residents used walkers.
Some used wheelchairs.
One had a temporary knee brace.
Susan had found the list accidentally.
She hadn’t known what Karen intended to do with it.
Now she was afraid.
Paul brought the information to the board.
They did not publish the list.
They did not confront Karen publicly.
Instead, they contacted the gate company and requested a full technical inspection.
The technician arrived the next morning.
He discovered that the emergency-release system had been tampered with.
Not destroyed.
Not disabled completely.
Just altered enough to make the system less predictable.
The technician shook his head.
“Whoever did this knew what they were touching.”
That changed everything.
The board contacted the police and preserved the records.
Walter was informed.
He sat silently for a while.
Then he asked one question.
“Was anyone hurt?”
“No.”
Walter nodded.
“Then let’s make sure it stays that way.”
