Chapter 5: Frank Finally Tells the Truth
Frank came back three days later.
This time, he did not stand in the driveway.
He waited by the sidewalk.
Margaret walked toward him.
“I know about the development proposal,” she said.
Frank nodded.
“I figured you would.”
“Who asked you to stop my move?”
He looked away.
“The association president.”
“Name?”
“Linda Mercer.”
Margaret knew Linda.
She had served on the neighborhood committee for years.
Linda had also sent Margaret flowers after Daniel’s funeral.
That detail hurt.
Frank rubbed his hands together.
“I was told the property issue was settled.”
“And you believed that?”
“I wanted to.”
Margaret waited.
Frank finally explained.
His father had been involved when the neighborhood was first developed.
There had been disagreements about drainage, access, and future development.
Years later, when Frank became active in the association, Linda showed him an old map that appeared to place the disputed strip under association control.
Frank accepted it.
When Daniel began asking questions, Frank became uncomfortable.
Then Daniel called him.
“He said he had the original documents,” Frank said.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was embarrassed.”
Margaret’s expression remained firm.
“That isn’t enough.”
“I know.”
Frank took a breath.
“I also received money.”
Margaret said nothing.
“Not directly for your property,” he added quickly. “It was a consulting payment. They wanted me to help persuade several residents to approve the development access.”
There it was.
The piece he had been hiding.
Frank had a financial interest.
Not a fortune.
But enough to make him choose silence.
Margaret looked at him for a long time.
“Did you know they planned to pressure me?”
“No.”
“Did you know they were going to make the truck leave?”
“I was told to make sure the move didn’t proceed until the property issue was resolved.”
“That isn’t what happened.”
“I know.”
Margaret looked toward her house.
Daniel’s curtains were still in the upstairs bedroom.
For a moment, she remembered him standing there years earlier, holding a paintbrush and complaining that the color looked wrong.
Then she looked back at Frank.
“My husband trusted you.”
Frank’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“And you failed him.”
Frank nodded.
“I did.”
It was the first honest thing he had said.
Margaret expected anger to come.
Instead, she felt something quieter.
Disappointment.
Frank reached into his pocket.
He handed her a flash drive.
“What is this?”
“Emails from the association.”
Margaret looked at him.
“I shouldn’t have copied them.”
“No,” she said. “But I’m glad you did.”
The emails showed that Linda had known about the original survey.
She had also instructed several residents to “encourage” Margaret to delay moving until the development agreement was finalized.
One email contained a sentence that made Margaret’s hands go cold:
Once the house is vacant, the issue becomes much easier to resolve.
Margaret read it twice.
The house.
Not Margaret.
Not Daniel’s estate.
The house.
As though an empty home would make the people inside it disappear from the story.
Margaret closed the folder.
“We’re not moving until this is settled.”
Frank looked at her.
“Are you staying?”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
She looked back at the house.
“I’m leaving when I’m ready.”
That distinction mattered.
