Chapter 2: The Camera
The HOA manager, Linda Brooks, arrived carrying a clipboard and wearing the expression of someone who had already dealt with too many neighborhood disputes that week.
She listened to Daniel first.
Then she examined the tire.
Finally, she looked at Karen.
“I want everyone to stay calm,” Linda said.
Karen laughed bitterly.
“I’m perfectly calm. He’s the one making accusations.”
Daniel said nothing.
That silence bothered Karen more than an argument would have.
She was used to controlling conversations by speaking louder than everyone else. Daniel’s refusal to match her volume left her with nothing to push against.
Linda asked whether anyone had seen what happened.
The elderly couple near the entrance exchanged glances.
The husband, Frank Miller, finally stepped forward.
“I saw Karen arguing with him earlier.”
Karen immediately turned.
“You saw an argument. That’s all.”
Frank nodded.
“That’s all I said.”
His wife, Evelyn, added quietly, “I also saw her standing beside the front of the vehicle afterward.”
Karen’s face reddened.
“You people are unbelievable.”
Linda raised a hand.
“No one is accusing anyone of anything yet.”
But Daniel noticed something else.
A small security sign near the clubhouse entrance indicated that the cameras recorded continuously and that footage was retained for several days.
He asked Linda whether the system covered the parking lot.
“It covers the entrance and most of the first row,” she said.
Karen’s expression changed again.
“That’s ridiculous,” she muttered.
Linda looked at her.
“What is?”
“Everyone acting like I’m some criminal because I wanted a parking space.”
Daniel finally spoke.
“No one called you a criminal.”
Karen stared at him.
“You don’t have to.”
She picked up her handbag and walked toward the clubhouse.
But she didn’t leave.
Instead, she went inside.
Ten minutes later, Linda discovered that Karen had requested access to the HOA office.
Karen claimed she wanted to file a formal complaint against Daniel for “harassing a resident.”
Linda refused to provide any security footage.
That made Karen angry.
She insisted that the footage belonged to the community.
Linda explained that recordings involving an active dispute would need to be preserved and reviewed according to HOA procedures.
Karen left the office visibly frustrated.
Outside, Daniel remained beside the vehicle.
His phone rang.
It was his commanding officer.
Daniel explained that the vehicle was temporarily disabled and that he might be delayed.
The conversation lasted less than a minute.
When he hung up, he looked toward the clubhouse.
This wasn’t simply inconvenient anymore.
If the vehicle could not move, his schedule would be disrupted.
And if someone had deliberately damaged government property, the matter could become much more serious.
Across the parking lot, Karen climbed into her SUV.
She sat behind the steering wheel without starting the engine.
Her eyes remained fixed on the security camera above the clubhouse.
Then she looked at the flat tire.
For the first time that afternoon, Karen appeared genuinely worried.
She started her vehicle and drove away.
But she left one thing behind.
Her name was now attached to the incident in the HOA manager’s written report.
And Linda had just made a decision that would make the next step unavoidable:
She was going to preserve the camera footage before anyone could request that it be deleted.
