Chapter 1: The Flat Tire

The hiss was the first thing everyone heard.

A sharp, steady leak escaped from the front tire of the military utility vehicle parked beside the clubhouse. The vehicle sat perfectly within the marked space, its olive-drab body catching the late-afternoon sunlight.

Karen Whitmore stood only a few feet away.

The moment she heard footsteps behind her, she pulled her enormous orange handbag against her side and stepped back from the tire.

Sergeant Daniel Hayes stopped.

His eyes moved from the flattened tire to Karen.

“Why is my tire flat—and why were you standing right beside it?”

Karen’s face changed instantly.

The smugness disappeared. Her eyebrows lifted, and her mouth opened in exaggerated disbelief.

“Don’t you dare accuse me! You parked in my spot!”

Daniel stared at her.

The parking space had no name on it. There was no reserved sign. It was simply one of the spaces closest to the clubhouse entrance.

He had parked there less than twenty minutes earlier while delivering documents to the HOA management office.

Karen had been waiting for that space.

She had made that clear from the moment he arrived.

She had stood near the curb, waving her hands and telling him that residents had priority. When Daniel calmly explained that the space was public within the clubhouse lot and that he would only be there briefly, Karen had become louder.

Now the tire was flat.

Daniel crouched beside it without touching Karen.

“It was fine when I arrived.”

Karen folded her arms.

“So?”

“You were the only person standing beside this wheel.”

Her expression hardened.

“Standing near a tire doesn’t make me responsible for it.”

Several residents had begun watching from the sidewalk.

One elderly couple stood near the clubhouse doors. A man in a baseball cap had stopped halfway to his car. Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked up toward the security camera mounted above the entrance.

Karen noticed.

Her confidence flickered.

“You think a camera makes you right?” she snapped.

“No,” Daniel said. “It might tell us what happened.”

Karen pointed toward the parking space.

“You should’ve thought about that before stealing my spot.”

Daniel stood.

“This isn’t about a parking space anymore.”

For the first time, Karen had nothing immediate to say.

Daniel called the HOA manager and requested that the vehicle remain where it was until the tire could be inspected.

That decision created a new problem.

The military vehicle had been scheduled to leave the property within the hour.

Now it couldn’t.

And the clubhouse’s evening community meeting was scheduled to begin in less than thirty minutes.

Karen watched Daniel make the call.

Then she looked at the security camera.

Her fingers tightened around the handle of her orange handbag.

The argument over a parking space had suddenly become something much larger.

And somewhere above them, a camera had been recording.
