Chapter 1: Give Me My Bag

“Karen! Give me my bag—right now!”

The words cut across the late-afternoon walkway just as Karen swung the grocery bag behind her back.

The bag had been hanging from the side of the elderly man’s wheelchair only seconds earlier. Now it was clenched in Karen’s large hand, safely out of his reach.

She took two deliberate steps backward.

The older homeowner reached toward her.

He couldn’t get it.

Karen knew that.

That was the point.

She stood beside the low landscaped planter, her oversized electric-blue jacket making her impossible to ignore. Her lime-green blouse, fluorescent purple trousers, tangerine-orange sneakers, and lemon-yellow necklace looked almost absurd against the quiet suburban setting. Her turquoise handbag hung from one shoulder as she held the man’s groceries like a prize she had decided belonged to her.

Her lips curled into a smug half-smile.

“Not until you tell me what’s in it.”

The homeowner stared at her.

He was in his late seventies, lean and slightly stooped, with silver-white hair, a neatly trimmed beard, and rectangular glasses. His hands rested firmly on the controls of his mobility wheelchair.

He didn’t look frightened.

He looked insulted.

That seemed to irritate Karen even more.

She raised the grocery bag higher.

“Come on,” she said mockingly. “You can reach it, can’t you?”

The homeowner tried once more.

The bag remained just beyond his fingertips.

Then came a sharp mechanical click.

He locked the wheelchair.

The small sound changed the atmosphere.

Karen’s smile faded slightly.

The man turned toward her.

“You stole my groceries because you think you can bully an old man?”

Karen leaned toward him.

“I’m stopping you from hiding something.”

Her voice had lost its playful edge.

Now there was accusation behind it.

She lowered the bag just enough for him to see what had caught her attention.

A small sealed envelope sat among the groceries.

It was ordinary at first glance.

White paper.

Handwritten name.

Sealed flap.

But Karen’s eyes stopped on it.

The homeowner noticed.

“Don’t touch that.”

Karen immediately pulled the bag against her chest.

“Why not? What’s in the envelope?”

“You have no right to take my things.”

Karen shook the bag.

The groceries rustled.

The envelope shifted inside.

“Then stop acting like there’s something you’re desperate to hide!”

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Karen looked at the handwritten name again.

Something changed in her face.

It was barely visible.

A flicker.

Recognition.

The name meant something to her.

She quickly covered it with suspicion.

“Wait…”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Why does that name sound familiar?”

The homeowner reached for the bag again.

Karen stepped backward.

“You’d better tell me what you’re hiding!”

The man moved his wheelchair forward several inches.

Karen had to retreat.

He never touched her.

He didn’t need to.

“I’m hiding nothing from you,” he said firmly. “It’s private.”

Karen stared at the envelope.

Then at him.

She tightened her grip.

“If it’s really private,” she said coldly, “why should I believe you deserve privacy after making this whole neighborhood deal with your secrets?”

The man’s expression hardened.

And for the first time, Karen looked less certain.

Because she had recognized the name.

And she knew exactly where she had seen it before.
