Chapter 6: What the Neighborhood Remembered

Three days later, the street looked different.

The fire-damaged house stood dark and empty behind temporary fencing.

Karen’s lawn was beginning to recover.

The grass was flattened in places, but new green shoots were already appearing.

The roses were damaged.

Some would survive.

Some wouldn’t.

Karen found herself caring less about which ones.

The neighborhood organized a small gathering for the Mercer family.

People brought food, clothing, photographs, and practical help.

Karen arrived carrying several boxes.

Inside were household supplies she had purchased for Frank and Linda.

Emily looked surprised.

“You didn’t have to do this.”

Karen shrugged.

“I know.”

She handed over the boxes.

Then she hesitated.

“There’s something else.”

Karen reached into her car and pulled out a folder.

It contained photographs she had taken during the fire.

Not the angry ones.

The useful ones.

Pictures showing where the hose had been placed, where the firefighters had worked, and how close the flames had come to the neighboring homes.

“I thought you might want these,” Karen said.

Emily looked through them.

One photograph showed the firefighter team working in front of the Mercer house.

Another showed the flames approaching the roof.

A third showed Karen’s lawn covered in water.

Emily smiled faintly.

“You took all these?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Karen looked at the picture of the firefighters.

“Because I finally understood what I was looking at.”

She paused.

“I was looking at my lawn.”

Emily waited.

“And they were looking at the whole neighborhood.”

No one said anything for several seconds.

Then Emily hugged her.

Karen stiffened at first.

She wasn’t accustomed to being hugged by people she had argued with.

Then she returned the embrace.

Across the street, Daniel watched from beside the fire engine.

Karen caught his eye.

She gave him a small nod.

He nodded back.

Later that afternoon, Karen walked through her garden.

She saw every mark the hose had left.

There were places where the grass had been pressed flat.

A flower bed needed to be replanted.

She could have spent the afternoon complaining.

Instead, she called Melissa.

“I think I need help fixing the garden.”

Melissa laughed.

“Finally.”

Karen smiled.

“Bring gloves.”

It became the first weekend in years that Karen and her daughter worked together in the yard.

They replaced flowers.

They repaired the border.

They cleaned the mud from the walkway.

And while they worked, Karen noticed something she had missed before.

Her lawn looked better when someone was standing beside her than when it looked perfect and she was standing alone.

The physical damage was temporary.

The memory wasn’t.

But neither was the change that came with it.
