Chapter 5: The Decision

By late afternoon, the fire had finally been contained to the neighboring property.

The house was badly damaged.

But the surrounding homes had been protected.

Karen stood behind the temporary barrier, staring at her own property.

Her lawn looked terrible.

Mud covered sections of the grass.

Several flowers were flattened.

A portion of her carefully arranged border had been disturbed.

For years, Karen had treated that garden like proof that she had control over her surroundings.

Now it looked imperfect.

And strangely, she didn’t care as much as she thought she would.

Emily returned from the hospital that evening.

Her mother was alive.

Her condition was stable.

Her father had suffered smoke exposure but was expected to recover.

The news moved through the neighborhood.

People began helping the Mercer family.

Someone brought meals.

Another neighbor offered temporary storage.

A local church offered a place for the family to stay.

Karen watched all of it from her porch.

Then Melissa arrived.

She stepped out of her car and looked at the damaged lawn.

“Oh, Mom.”

Karen sighed.

“I know.”

Melissa looked toward the burned house.

“Are they okay?”

Karen nodded.

“Mostly.”

Melissa looked at her mother.

“Did you really argue with the firefighters about your lawn?”

Karen looked embarrassed.

“I was upset.”

“You were angry.”

Karen didn’t answer.

Melissa walked onto the lawn.

She touched one of the flattened flowers.

“Mom, it’s grass.”

Karen stared at her.

Then she looked toward the Mercer house.

“I know.”

It was the first time she had said it without defending herself.

The next morning, Karen found Daniel near the fire scene.

He was helping crews pack equipment.

Karen approached him.

“I owe you an apology.”

Daniel looked up.

She continued before she could lose her nerve.

“I thought you were destroying my property.”

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.”

“No,” Karen said. “I don’t think I did.”

She looked toward her lawn.

“You were trying to protect it.”

Daniel glanced at the house.

“We were trying to protect the whole street.”

Karen nodded.

Then she asked a question she had been thinking about all night.

“Did the hose crossing my lawn actually help stop the fire?”

Daniel answered honestly.

“It helped us position water where we needed it.”

Karen looked down.

That was enough.

She didn’t ask about compensation.

She didn’t mention her roses.

Instead, she walked back toward her house.

But before she reached the porch, Emily called her name.

Karen turned.

Emily was holding something.

It was the photograph from the previous day.

“I wanted to thank you,” Emily said.

Karen looked confused.

“For what?”

“You stayed with me while they took my parents away.”

Karen remembered.

She had forgotten about that part.

“I didn’t do much.”

“You stayed.”

Karen looked at the photograph.

Then she looked at the burned house.

Something inside her shifted.

But the neighborhood still had a problem.

The Mercer home was no longer livable.

And someone had to decide what happened next.
