Chapter 4: What Margaret Had Left Behind
Daniel spent the next several days going through every box.
It was slow work.
He wasn’t a young man anymore, and some memories were harder to handle than others.
Every box seemed to contain a piece of Margaret.
A Christmas ornament.
An old recipe book.
A scarf that still carried the faintest trace of her perfume.
Letters from when they were newly married.
Photographs from vacations they could barely afford.
He had planned to sort everything quickly.
Instead, he found himself reading.
And remembering.
Then, inside an old filing cabinet, he found a second envelope.
This one contained copies of emails.
One was from the neighborhood association.
Another was from a property developer.
The emails showed that several people had discussed obtaining access through the disputed strip years earlier.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Linda Carver.
Daniel read the messages carefully.
Linda had not been the developer.
She had not owned the property.
But she had repeatedly communicated with the people involved.
She had asked whether Daniel’s property records had been “properly reviewed.”
She had also written that Margaret was “unlikely to cooperate.”
Daniel sat back.
That sentence bothered him.
Margaret hadn’t been unreasonable.
She had simply asked for documentation.
Daniel found another note.
This one was in Margaret’s handwriting.
They keep telling me it’s only a technicality. Technicalities are what protect people when everyone else decides the answer before checking the facts.
Daniel closed his eyes.
He could hear Margaret saying it.
Then he noticed another sheet beneath the note.
It was a photocopy of an older survey.
A section had been highlighted.
Daniel called Thomas.
When Thomas arrived, Daniel placed the document in front of him.
Thomas looked at it.
Then his face fell.
“I remember this.”
“Why was it hidden?”
Thomas shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel pointed to Linda’s name on one of the emails.
“Then maybe ask her.”
Thomas didn’t respond.
Instead, he said quietly, “There’s something you should know.”
Daniel waited.
“The redevelopment company is still interested in that land.”
Daniel looked toward the garage.
“So that’s why Linda was searching my boxes.”
Thomas nodded.
“She may believe there’s something in there that could stop them.”
Daniel looked at Margaret’s handwriting again.
For three years, he had thought those papers were simply unfinished business.
Now he understood.
Margaret had been protecting something.
Not money.
Not land.
A record.
Proof of what had actually happened.
