Chapter 6: When the Same Siren Came Again

Two weeks later, an ambulance returned to the neighborhood.

Karen heard the siren before she saw it.

Her heart tightened.

The vehicle turned onto the street.

For one brief second, the old Karen returned.

She noticed a sedan parked too close to the restricted curb.

She noticed the ambulance slowing.

She could already imagine herself marching over.

Then she stopped.

Instead, she walked toward the sedan.

The driver was nowhere around.

Karen looked at the ambulance.

Then at the curb.

Then at the house ahead.

She didn’t touch the car.

She didn’t yell.

She simply waved the paramedic forward.

“There’s a car blocking part of the curb,” she said. “I’ll help keep the way clear.”

The paramedic recognized her.

His eyebrows lifted.

Karen gave him an embarrassed half-smile.

“I’m not stopping you this time.”

The paramedic nodded.

“Thank you.”

Karen moved to the side.

The ambulance passed.

The rear doors opened.

The crew rushed inside the house.

Karen stayed outside.

She didn’t ask whose house it was.

She didn’t ask who had called.

She didn’t ask whether the patient had permission.

She simply watched the emergency crew do its job.

A few minutes later, Lily came running down the sidewalk.

Karen recognized the fear in her face.

Karen stepped toward her.

“Go inside,” she said gently. “They’re with your family.”

Lily nodded and hurried through the door.

Karen stood alone beside the curb.

The same sign was still there.

The same restriction.

The same street.

But everything looked different.

The rule had never changed.

Only Karen’s understanding of it had.
