Chapter 3: What Karen Thought She Knew
The ambulance left.
The warning lights disappeared around the corner.
The street became quiet again.
But the incident did not disappear with it.
By evening, nearly everyone knew what had happened.
Not because someone had organized a meeting.
Not because there was a neighborhood announcement.
People simply talked.
Martha told her husband.
A man walking his dog mentioned it to another neighbor.
Someone had seen Karen standing in front of the ambulance.
Someone else had seen the stretcher.
By sunset, the story had traveled through half the block.
Karen heard pieces of it while walking home.
None of them matched the version in her head.
According to one neighbor, she had “blocked an ambulance.”
According to another, she had “argued with a paramedic.”
Someone else said she had asked why the patient hadn’t “asked permission.”
Karen became furious.
People were twisting what happened.
She had been concerned about the rules.
That was all.
At home, she placed her purple handbag on the kitchen counter and poured herself a glass of water.
Her husband, Richard, looked up from the newspaper.
“I heard there was an incident.”
Karen glared at him.
“People are exaggerating.”
“What happened?”
“I saw an ambulance parked where it wasn’t supposed to be.”
Richard folded the newspaper.
“Was there an emergency?”
Karen hesitated.
“Yes.”
“And you blocked it?”
“I was asking questions.”
Richard stared at her.
Karen hated that look.
It wasn’t anger.
It was disappointment.
She walked away.
Later that night, she opened the neighborhood association’s online group.
There were already dozens of comments.
Most didn’t mention her name.
They didn’t need to.
Everyone knew.
Karen read them one by one.
Then she saw a message from Lily.
It was short.
She thanked the paramedics.
She said her grandfather had suffered a serious medical episode and that the ambulance had arrived quickly.
She also thanked the neighbors who had given the emergency crew space.
Karen stared at that sentence.
Given the emergency crew space.
She remembered the stretcher.
She remembered stepping sideways.
She remembered saying, “Then take them somewhere else.”
Her stomach tightened.
She closed the page.
For several minutes, she sat in silence.
Then she opened it again.
This time, she noticed something she hadn’t known earlier.
Frank Mercer had been one of the people who helped establish the neighborhood’s emergency-access rules years ago.
The very rules Karen believed she was defending.
The purpose of the curb restriction was not to make the street look orderly.
It was to keep emergency vehicles from being blocked.
Karen leaned back in her chair.
She read the old association document.
Emergency access.
Fire response.
Medical response.
Ambulance access.
Suddenly the meaning of the sign changed.
The curb wasn’t protected so residents could control where others parked.
It was protected so emergency vehicles could stop when someone needed help.
Karen stared at the screen.
She had used the rule to challenge the very vehicle the rule existed to protect.
She shut the laptop.
But one question remained.
Why had the paramedic looked toward Frank and Evelyn’s house before answering her?
And why had Karen felt so certain that there was something being hidden from her?
The answer came the next morning.
