Chapter 1: The Wrench at the Fire Line

The metallic clink of a wrench hitting against a screwdriver cut through the roar of the fire.

Karen Mitchell came marching toward the fire engine with both tools raised in her hands.

Flames were already visible through the upper windows of the house across the street. Smoke rolled over the roof and drifted through the quiet suburban neighborhood. A red fire engine stood diagonally across the street, hoses running from its side toward the burning home.

Karen didn’t seem impressed.

She stopped just outside the emergency perimeter and pointed both tools toward the truck.

“You’re blocking my driveway! Move this truck—or I’m finding out why it’s parked here!”

Captain Daniel Brooks turned sharply.

He had been supervising the hose line when he saw the tools in Karen’s hands.

“Ma’am, drop the tools and step back.”

Karen stared at him as though he had personally insulted her.

“Why should I? That truck is sitting on my street, blocking my house, and nobody even asked me!”

Daniel stepped between her and the engine.

“We’re fighting an active house fire. You cannot approach the truck or equipment.”

Karen pointed toward the burning house.

“That’s my neighbor’s fire! My driveway is my problem! Move the truck!”

Daniel’s expression remained controlled.

“Your neighbor’s house is burning. This truck stays here. Step back.”

Karen took one step forward.

Daniel immediately raised his hand.

“Stop.”

She stopped.

For several seconds, the only sounds were the siren, rushing water, and the crackle of burning wood.

Then Karen lifted the wrench slightly.

“I’m the one who lives here. If your truck is blocking my property, I have every right to know what you’re doing.”

“Put the wrench and screwdriver down.”

“I’m not interfering. I’m checking.”

“You’re not authorized to check emergency equipment.”

Karen looked from Daniel to the fire engine, then toward her driveway.

Finally, she placed both tools on the pavement outside the emergency line.

But she didn’t leave.

She folded her arms.

“If this is my street and my driveway, why should a fire truck get more rights than the homeowner just because someone else’s house is burning?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

He turned back toward the fire.

That was when Karen noticed something she hadn’t expected.

The fire engine wasn’t simply blocking her driveway.

Its rear wheels were positioned exactly where they needed to be so the aerial ladder could reach the burning home’s upper floor.

And Daniel had just received an urgent radio call.

The fire had spread to the attic.

Karen looked at the flames again.

For the first time, her expression changed.

Not to concern.

To calculation.

She picked up her wrench.

And this time, she walked toward her own driveway.
