Chapter 1: The Charger She Refused to Give Up

The charging screen flashed red.

ERROR — CONNECTOR NOT COMPATIBLE.

A sharp electronic beep cut through the noise of the busy shopping-center parking lot.

Karen stared at the screen for half a second.

Then she looked away.

Her black luxury SUV sat directly in front of the public EV charger, its charging port untouched because the connector in her hand simply would not fit.

Behind her, a silver electric sedan had been waiting.

Its driver, a man in his late fifties named David Mercer, had watched the same error appear three times.

Karen pulled the connector away from her SUV and dropped it back onto the pedestal.

Then she swung her enormous neon-orange handbag onto the charger base and planted herself directly in front of the station.

David stepped out of his car.

“Your car can’t use that plug,” he said calmly. “You’re not even charging.”

Karen turned sharply.

“Don’t touch that charger! I claimed it—even if my car can’t use it!”

David looked at the screen.

Then at her SUV.

Then back at Karen.

A line of EVs was beginning to form behind him.

“You’re blocking everyone for a charger you can’t use.”

Karen folded her arms.

“I got here first.”

“That doesn’t mean you get to keep it.”

“It means exactly that.”

She moved closer to the charger, deliberately putting her body between David and the connector.

“I may need it in five minutes. Ten minutes. An hour. You don’t get to decide when I’m done.”

David glanced behind him.

Two more electric vehicles had joined the line.

A woman in a blue sedan was checking her phone impatiently. An older couple sat inside another vehicle farther back.

David took a breath.

“So you’re keeping everyone here just in case?”

Karen lifted her chin.

“Yes. Because I was here first.”

The argument might have ended there if Karen had simply moved.

Instead, she picked up her handbag and placed it directly beside the charger.

She had no intention of leaving.

David returned to his car.

But he did not drive away.

He reached for his phone.

Karen noticed.

“What are you doing?”

“Documenting that the station is unavailable because you’re standing in front of it.”

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Irritation.

“You better not record me.”

David lowered the phone slightly.

“Then move.”

Karen stared at him.

The error beep sounded again.

This time, everyone in the line heard it.

Karen’s eyes flicked toward the screen.

For the first time, she seemed to realize that the problem was no longer just between two drivers.

A uniformed shopping-center security employee was walking toward the station.

And behind him came a woman carrying a clipboard.

Karen recognized the uniform immediately.

She pointed at David.

“He’s harassing me.”

The security employee stopped several feet away.

“Ma’am, let’s first figure out what’s happening.”

Karen crossed her arms tighter.

“I’m using this charger.”

The screen behind her flashed red again.

ERROR — CONNECTOR NOT COMPATIBLE.

The security employee looked at the screen.

Then at Karen.

Then at the growing line of cars.

And he reached for his radio.
