Chapter 1: The First Horn

The tip of Daniel Harper’s wooden cane touched the first white stripe of the crosswalk.

A horn exploded behind him.

Daniel flinched.

For a fraction of a second, his shoulders tightened and his right foot stopped halfway through its next step. He turned his head.

A dark-gray SUV sat so close to the crosswalk that its front bumper seemed to challenge the painted lines.

Behind the wheel was a woman in her early sixties wearing a blazing red faux-leather jacket, a golden-yellow blouse, fluorescent pink pants, and orange platform sneakers. Her enormous orange handbag hung against the driver’s door.

She leaned through the open window.

“Move! Why are you stopping traffic just to crawl across this street?”

Daniel looked at her.

Then he looked down at his cane.

He placed the rubber tip carefully on the next stripe.

Tap.

He took another step.

The horn sounded again.

Daniel stopped directly in front of the SUV.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

The woman’s pale blue eyes narrowed.

“I said move! You’re making everybody wait!”

Daniel’s breathing was steady now.

“I’m in the crosswalk,” he said. “You’re the one refusing to wait.”

The woman’s expression hardened.

“I don’t have all day.”

Daniel had heard those words before.

Not from this woman.

Not even in this neighborhood.

But from doctors, younger coworkers, impatient strangers, and people who seemed to believe that getting older meant becoming an obstacle.

He had spent seventy-eight years learning that some things were worth refusing to hurry.

Crossing a street safely was one of them.

The woman pointed toward the opposite curb.

“You expect me to sit here while you take all day? Put that cane down and get across!”

Daniel tightened his fingers around the wooden handle.

The SUV’s engine idled.

The neighborhood seemed strangely quiet around them.

Then Daniel stepped forward again.

Tap.

Step.

The woman honked.

Daniel stopped.

He looked directly through the windshield.

“You keep rushing me like you’re trying to scare me out of the street.”

“I’m trying to get you out of my way!”

“If you can walk, then walk!”

Daniel raised his cane vertically between himself and the vehicle.

“I am walking,” he said. “You’re the one turning a crosswalk into a threat.”

The woman stared at him.

For the first time, she seemed unsure whether the shouting was working.

Daniel lowered his cane.

Tap.

Step.

Tap.

Step.

The SUV remained where it was.

The woman gripped the steering wheel.

“So now I’m the villain because I don’t want to wait forever?”

Daniel kept walking.

“You’re not being asked to wait forever. You’re being asked to wait for an old man to finish crossing.”

He reached the final stripe.

The woman leaned farther out of the window.

“So if someone is old enough to slow you down, does that mean everyone else has to surrender the road to them?”

Daniel placed his cane on the concrete curb.

He did not answer.

He simply stepped onto the sidewalk.

Behind the SUV, another car had stopped.

Its driver had been watching.

The woman glanced into her mirror.

Her face changed.

Not because Daniel had won an argument.

Because she had suddenly realized someone else had seen everything.

And the person behind her was already reaching for something on the passenger seat.
