Chapter 1: “Where Is My Controller?”

Karen moved faster than anyone expected.

One moment, the black controller rested on the armrest of the elderly man’s powered wheelchair. The next, her hand shot forward, grabbed it, and disappeared behind her enormous orange handbag.

The entire theft took less than a second.

The elderly man turned back from the shelf with a box of tea in his hand.

He looked at the empty armrest.

Then he looked at Karen.

“Where is my controller?”

Karen’s lips curled into a crooked smile.

“What controller?”

His eyes immediately dropped to her handbag.

He had seen the movement.

He had heard the sharp plastic click when she shoved the device inside.

“Karen. You took it. Give it back.”

She stepped backward.

The bright hot-pink jacket stretched across her broad shoulders as she pulled the orange handbag tightly against her chest.

“Then come get it.”

The man’s expression changed.

He was in his late seventies, with silver-white hair, a neatly trimmed beard, and the tired but dignified face of someone who had spent years learning how to do things differently without allowing the world to treat him as helpless.

His wheelchair was not a toy.

The controller was not a television remote.

It was the device that allowed him to control his mobility.

Without it, he could not simply drive away.

“You know exactly what that does,” he said.

Karen gave the handbag a deliberate little shake.

The controller clicked against something inside.

Her smile widened.

“Oh, now you’re worried about losing control?”

His jaw tightened.

“That controls my chair.”

“Maybe you’ll stop bossing everyone around when you can’t drive off.”

He stared at her.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then he held out his hand.

“Give me my property.”

Karen looked at his hand.

Then at the controller hidden inside her bag.

Then back at him.

She seemed almost disappointed that he wasn’t frightened enough.

“I took it because you wouldn’t listen.”

“I don’t know what you think I did.”

“You were blocking the aisle.”

He glanced around.

There was plenty of room.

His wheelchair had been pulled close to the shelf, leaving an open lane beside it.

“I stopped here to get one item.”

“You were in everyone’s way.”

“Nobody asked you to take my controller.”

Karen’s face hardened.

She stepped closer.

“You people always expect everyone else to accommodate you.”

The words hung between them.

The man’s fingers slowly lowered.

He wasn’t going to grab her.

He wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of turning her theft into a physical confrontation.

Instead, he looked directly into her eyes.

“You don’t get to control another person’s mobility because you’re angry.”

For the first time, Karen’s smile disappeared.

Her lips pressed into a thin line.

She had expected embarrassment.

She had expected pleading.

Instead, she had found something she could not easily intimidate.

And she was still holding the one thing he needed to leave.
