Chapter 1: The Moment the Machine Went Dead

The portable machine stopped without warning.

One second, it was humming beside the narrow strip of landscaping between two suburban homes. The next, the motor died, the fan blades slowed, and the entire appliance fell silent.

Karen froze with both hands wrapped around its handle.

“What happened?”

Across the property line, seventy-year-old Daniel Mercer stood beside the exterior outlet on his house. His silver-gray hair was neatly combed, his glasses sitting low on his nose, and his expression was far calmer than Karen’s.

He had just pulled the removable extension cord from the outlet.

Karen stared at the dead machine.

Then she looked at the cable.

Then at Daniel.

“You unplugged it.”

Daniel said nothing.

Karen marched toward him, her bright red cardigan and hot-pink blouse making her impossible to miss against the muted colors of the neighborhood. Her yellow scarf bounced against her chest as she walked, while her orange patterned pants seemed almost deliberately chosen to attract attention.

“That was powering my equipment.”

Daniel held the disconnected plug at his side.

“I know.”

“You can’t just shut it off!”

Daniel looked toward the narrow strip of landscaping separating their properties.

“That outlet is on my house.”

Karen’s face tightened.

“You left the cord there.”

“I left my extension cord on my property.”

“And I was using it.”

“That doesn’t make it yours.”

For several seconds, neither moved.

Karen finally grabbed the appliance handle again and began dragging the machine toward her own yard.

Its wheels scraped against the pavement.

Daniel watched without approaching.

That was when Karen noticed something.

The cable she had been using was still lying beside the machine.

But another cable disappeared behind it.

She quickly reached down and pulled the second cable toward herself.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Why are there two?”

Karen immediately stood in front of the cable.

“Don’t worry about it.”

That answer changed everything.

Daniel had spent most of his adult life believing that neighbors could solve ordinary disagreements without turning them into wars. He had tolerated Karen’s complaints about landscaping, trash cans, parking, sprinkler schedules, and even the height of his hedge.

But this was different.

Someone had been drawing power from his house.

And now there appeared to be another cable.

Daniel looked at the second line disappearing behind Karen’s machine.

“Where does that one go?”

Karen’s expression hardened.

“Stay on your side.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

He simply looked at the cable again.

For the first time, Karen seemed less angry than nervous.

And Daniel noticed that she was standing exactly where she could hide it from him.
