Chapter 4: The Missing Minutes

Three days later, the HOA board held its monthly meeting.

Marilyn attended.

So did Emily.

Diane sat at the front of the room.

For the first twenty minutes, everything appeared ordinary.

Lawn maintenance.

Pool repairs.

A discussion about holiday decorations.

Then parking enforcement appeared on the agenda.

Diane straightened in her chair.

“We’ve had increasing concerns about unauthorized signage and private use of common areas,” she said.

Marilyn listened.

She did not interrupt.

Diane presented photographs of several driveways.

Then she displayed a photograph of Marilyn’s No Parking sign.

Someone on the board asked whether the sign had been approved.

Diane said she was “looking into the historical records.”

Marilyn raised her hand.

The room became quiet.

She placed the approval letter on the table.

“The historical record has already been found.”

Diane’s expression tightened.

Marilyn handed copies to the board.

The board president read the document.

Then looked at Diane.

“Did you know this had been approved?”

Diane hesitated.

“Yes.”

The answer was quiet.

Marilyn felt a strange sadness.

Not satisfaction.

Sadness.

Because the conflict had moved beyond parking.

Someone had knowingly tried to use an HOA process against her.

The board president asked Diane about the violation notice.

Diane said she had not issued it.

Marilyn placed the document on the table.

“It has your name.”

Diane stared at it.

“I never put that in your garage.”

“I didn’t say you did.”

The room fell silent.

Then the board president noticed something.

The violation notice carried an outdated HOA logo.

He asked the management company representative to check the records.

The representative did.

The result was immediate.

The document had not been generated by the HOA.

It had been created independently.

Someone had copied an old form.

Someone had printed it.

And someone had placed it inside Marilyn’s home.

The board president looked disturbed.

“How did this get into your garage?”

Marilyn answered honestly.

“I don’t know.”

Diane spoke for the first time.

“Maybe someone is trying to make me look guilty.”

Emily glanced at her mother.

Marilyn said nothing.

The meeting ended without a decision.

But outside the building, another neighbor approached Marilyn.

His name was Frank Delgado.

He was seventy-two and had lived in the community since it was first developed.

“I’ve seen this before,” he said.

Marilyn looked at him.

“Seen what?”

Frank lowered his voice.

“Diane tried to get another homeowner to remove a security camera last year.”

“Why?”

“She said it violated privacy rules.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

Frank looked toward the parking lot.

“The homeowner refused. A month later, the camera caught someone entering the backyard.”

Marilyn felt a chill.

“Who?”

“We never found out.”

Frank paused.

“But the homeowner moved away six months later.”

That night, Marilyn checked the security system around her house.

One camera covered the driveway.

Another covered the side gate.

A third faced the garage.

She opened the recordings.

At first, nothing appeared unusual.

Then she found something.

Two nights earlier, at 11:43 p.m., a figure had walked through the side gate.

The person wore a dark jacket and cap.

They approached the garage.

And stopped.

The video showed the figure looking directly at the camera.

Then reaching up.

The recording went black.

Marilyn stared at the screen.

Someone had tampered with her camera.

And suddenly, the sign seemed like the least important part of the story.
