Chapter 4: The Boundary Line

David hurried outside.

Karen was standing near the side gate, holding a measuring tape.

“What are you doing here?”

She turned.

“I told you. I’m checking the boundary.”

“You were told not to enter my property.”

Karen lifted her chin.

“I’m trying to prevent a problem.”

“You are creating one.”

For once, Karen did not argue.

She simply stared at the ground.

David followed her gaze.

The original metal property marker was partially exposed.

The soil around it had clearly been disturbed.

David crouched down.

The marker was not where the survey showed it should be.

Someone had moved the surrounding dirt.

Karen immediately said, “I didn’t move it.”

David looked up.

“I didn’t accuse you.”

Her expression changed.

That tiny reaction told him more than her words.

David called the county survey office.

A licensed surveyor was eventually brought in to verify the boundary.

The result was unmistakable.

David’s flowerpots were entirely on his property.

Karen’s claimed boundary did not exist.

But the surveyor found something else.

The orange flags Karen had planted were positioned along an imaginary line that cut through David’s porch.

The line had been copied from the old landscaping document.

Not the legal survey.

Not the property deed.

The landscaping plan.

The discovery should have ended the argument.

Instead, Karen became more determined.

She began telling neighbors that David was manipulating the survey.

She said the HOA was protecting him.

She even claimed the surveyor was “working for him.”

David stopped responding.

He had learned something important.

The more he argued, the more Karen turned every disagreement into another accusation.

So he changed tactics.

He documented everything.

Dates.

Photographs.

Letters.

Camera footage.

HOA communications.

He kept the evidence organized in one binder.

Meanwhile, his daughter Emily visited from out of town.

She noticed the flowers immediately.

“Mom planted these, right?”

David nodded.

Emily touched one of the pots.

“She’d be furious if she knew someone was trying to take these away.”

David smiled faintly.

“She’d probably tell me to stop arguing and water them.”

Emily laughed.

For the first time in weeks, the porch felt like home again.

But that evening, another letter arrived.

This one was not anonymous.

It came from the HOA.

The board was calling a formal hearing regarding repeated complaints and unauthorized property-boundary enforcement.

David closed the envelope.

The next meeting would not be about flowers.

It would be about who had the authority to decide what happened in their neighborhood.
