Chapter 5: The Flower Bed

Weeks passed.

Daniel replaced the plants that had been destroyed, one section at a time.

The hydrangea took longer.

Some branches had been badly damaged, but new green growth eventually appeared.

One Saturday morning, Daniel was kneeling beside it when he noticed someone standing at the sidewalk.

Evelyn.

She stayed outside the property line.

In her hands was a small wooden garden marker.

“I found this at the clubhouse,” she said.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

The lettering had faded with age.

Susan’s Garden.

He had made it years ago and forgotten it after Susan died.

Daniel took the marker.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then he pressed it into the soil beside the hydrangea.

The plant was not as full as it had once been.

But it was alive.

Evelyn looked at it.

“It’s coming back.”

Daniel smiled.

“So is the garden.”

She nodded.

Then she turned and walked back toward the sidewalk.

Daniel stayed where he was.

The neighborhood had not changed much.

The same houses stood along the street. The same sidewalks ran past the yards. The HOA still had rules, and the city still had utility easements.

What had changed was simpler.

Everyone knew where the lines were.

Daniel touched the wooden marker once.

The flower bed belonged to his home.

The rules belonged to the association.

The utility corridor belonged to the city’s right of access.

And no title, office, or argument could erase those distinctions.

The hydrangea moved gently in the afternoon breeze.

Daniel went back to work in the soil.

This time, nobody crossed the line.
