Chapter 5: The Second Person in the Video

Daniel invited Greg over.

They watched the doorbell footage together on the television.

Greg immediately recognized the man.

“That isn’t me.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No. I know.”

Greg leaned closer.

“That’s Frank.”

Frank Wallace was Greg’s older brother.

He had helped Eleanor with neighborhood projects before, including installing decorative signs and garden fixtures.

Greg looked troubled.

“Why would Frank be there?”

Daniel paused the video.

“That’s what I want to know.”

They called Frank.

At first, he denied helping Eleanor.

Then Daniel mentioned the camera.

The denial became silence.

Finally, Frank admitted he had brought tools.

But he insisted Eleanor had told him Daniel had agreed to move the mailbox.

Frank had believed her.

According to him, he had loosened the mounting hardware because Eleanor wanted the mailbox moved several feet closer to the property line.

Then he left.

He hadn’t seen Daniel arrive.

He hadn’t realized Eleanor intended to move it immediately.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

“So you loosened the bracket?”

“Yes.”

“Without speaking to me?”

“I thought she had permission.”

That answer didn’t repair the damage.

But it explained something.

Eleanor had not simply grabbed the mailbox and shifted it.

She had arranged for someone else to loosen it first.

That was why the post had been pulled sideways.

Daniel thanked Frank for telling the truth.

Then he asked one final question.

“Did she tell you why she wanted it moved?”

Frank hesitated.

“She said she wanted the whole front of your property to look cleaner.”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

The motive was almost painfully ordinary.

There was no grand conspiracy.

No secret property dispute.

Just one person who had become convinced that her preferred version of the neighborhood mattered more than another person’s right to decide what happened on his own property.

That afternoon, Daniel invited Eleanor over.

Melissa came too, but stayed inside.

Daniel didn’t want an audience.

He placed the damaged bracket on the workbench.

Beside it were the loose screws.

He didn’t accuse her.

He simply showed her the evidence.

Eleanor stared at it.

Then at the mailbox.

“I didn’t mean to damage it.”

Daniel nodded.

“I believe you.”

Her eyes lifted.

“But you did.”

She swallowed.

“I thought you were being difficult.”

“About my own mailbox?”

She had no answer.

Daniel told her the repair cost.

Eleanor offered to pay half.

Daniel refused.

“I’m not asking you to pay because I won an argument. I’m asking you to take responsibility for what happened.”

For several seconds, Eleanor stood completely still.

Then she said something Daniel hadn’t expected.

“I was embarrassed.”

“About what?”

She looked toward the street.

“When I moved here, I thought everything would be perfect. Everyone took care of everything. Then I started noticing little things.”

Daniel understood.

The leaves.

The mailbox.

The garden borders.

Little things.

She had been trying to control the little things because they made her feel as though she could control the larger ones too.

But understanding her did not erase what she had done.

Daniel pointed toward the mailbox.

“Fixing that starts with putting it back the way it was.”

Eleanor nodded.

For the first time, she didn’t argue.
