Chapter 1: The Chair She Claimed

“DON’T TOUCH THAT CHAIR! I SAVED IT, AND YOU’RE NOT TAKING IT!”

The words cut across the hospital waiting room before anyone had time to wonder what was happening.

Richard Hale stopped with one hand still wrapped around his black cane. At seventy-eight, he had learned to move carefully in crowded places. His knees had been giving him trouble for months, and that morning he had already spent nearly an hour standing near the reception desk while waiting for his name to be called.

Now, finally, a chair had opened.

Or at least, it looked open.

A huge electric-orange handbag sat in the middle of it.

The woman beside it grabbed the bag and pulled it against her chest as if Richard had tried to steal it.

“Saved it for whom?” Richard asked quietly. “There’s nobody sitting there.”

The woman narrowed her eyes.

“That’s none of your business. I got here first.”

Richard looked around the room.

Every other chair was occupied. Some patients were elderly. One woman held an ice pack against her forehead. A man with an oxygen tank sat near the window. A mother bounced a sleeping child against her shoulder.

Richard swallowed and steadied himself.

“I’ve been standing a long time,” he said. “I just need somewhere to sit.”

“Then keep standing.”

Her name was Karen Whitmore. Richard did not know that yet.

He only knew that she seemed determined to turn an empty chair into private property.

He pointed gently toward the handbag.

“Your bag is using the chair, not you.”

Karen stood.

She was taller and broader than Richard expected, dressed in an aggressively bright combination of scarlet, orange, yellow, and pink. She stepped directly between him and the chair.

“Don’t you dare tell me what I can do with my seat.”

Richard’s fingers tightened around his cane.

“I’m not asking for special treatment. I’m asking you to move your bag for one minute.”

Karen pointed at his cane.

“Your cane doesn’t make you more important than me.”

The waiting room fell noticeably quieter.

Then a nurse named Melissa Grant approached from the reception area.

She had heard enough.

“Ma’am,” Melissa said calmly, “who are you holding the seat for?”

Karen’s expression changed.

“My friend.”

“Is your friend here?”

“She’s coming.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

Melissa glanced at the empty chair, then at the handbag.

“This is a patient waiting area. If nobody is using the chair, please let Mr. Hale sit.”

Karen opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Richard lowered himself into the chair with visible relief.

For a moment, it seemed the confrontation was over.

But as Melissa walked away, Richard noticed something strange.

Karen had picked up her handbag very quickly.

And when she did, a small white hospital wristband fell from inside it.

Karen saw Richard looking at it.

Her face went pale.

She stepped forward and covered it with her shoe.

Richard said nothing.

But now he knew there was more to the story than a woman refusing to give up a chair.

And whatever was printed on that wristband, Karen clearly did not want anyone to see it.
