Chapter 4: The Small Handprint
The next morning, Mara received an unexpected visitor.
Tyler’s mother, Emily, stood on her porch holding her son’s jacket.
She looked exhausted.
“Mom, Tyler told me he saw someone by the police car.”
Mara stepped aside.
“Come in.”
Emily entered.
She had not slept much.
Tyler, eight years old, had been frightened since the previous night. He had told his mother that a man had told him to stay quiet.
Mara felt a chill.
“Did he say who?”
Emily shook her head.
“He said the man told him he was looking for something.”
“What?”
“He didn’t know.”
Mara sat down.
The situation suddenly felt much more serious than an HOA feud.
A child had been present.
A tracking device had been attached to a police cruiser.
And someone had deliberately covered the vehicle in fingerprints.
Reed arrived shortly afterward.
He spoke carefully with Emily and asked Tyler questions without pressuring him.
The boy remembered one thing.
The man had been wearing a ring.
A thick silver ring with a dark stone.
Reed immediately remembered seeing that ring before.
At an HOA meeting.
On the hand of Glenn Harper, the clubhouse manager.
Glenn had claimed he was inside the building all night.
But the camera footage showed someone entering the clubhouse through a side entrance shortly before midnight.
Reed asked Glenn about it.
Glenn denied knowing anything.
Then Reed placed a still photograph from the footage on the desk.
The image showed the hooded figure’s hand.
The silver ring was visible.
Glenn stared at it.
His face changed.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Reed noticed.
“Where did you get that ring?”
Glenn looked down.
“I lost it months ago.”
“Where?”
“Outside.”
“Who found it?”
“I don’t know.”
Reed remained silent.
Glenn rubbed his forehead.
Finally, he admitted the truth.
He had been angry at Mara.
Not because of the hydrangeas.
Because Mara had discovered something else.
The HOA board had quietly been using a private contractor to photograph homeowners’ properties for compliance checks. Glenn had arranged some of the inspections.
Mara’s complaint threatened to expose the practice.
But Glenn insisted he hadn’t touched the cruiser.
He said someone else had borrowed his jacket two nights earlier.
His adult nephew, Derek, had been staying nearby.
Derek had a history of petty theft and had recently argued with the HOA over parking fines.
The investigation moved toward Derek.
But Mara still wasn’t satisfied.
She returned to the cruiser with Reed.
They examined the rear door again.
The small handprint remained.
Mara stared at it.
“I know that hand.”
Reed looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
She pointed to the edge of the print.
“Tyler has a scar across his palm.”
The print showed a faint interruption across the center.
It matched.
Reed’s expression changed.
Tyler had touched the cruiser.
But that didn’t mean he had done anything wrong.
Mara remembered something Emily had said.
Tyler had told her that he saw the hooded man hiding something.
Then the boy had tried to get closer.
Perhaps the little handprint wasn’t evidence of guilt.
Perhaps it was evidence of a child trying to understand something frightening.
Reed crouched beside the rear door.
“What did he touch?”
Mara looked at the print.
“Maybe the handle.”
Reed opened the door.
Inside, the back seat looked ordinary.
Then he noticed a tiny smear on the edge of the seat.
Something metallic had scratched the leather.
He reached underneath.
His fingers found a small object.
A key.
Not a car key.
A locker key.
And engraved on the metal were three numbers.
The same three numbers printed on the HOA clubhouse storage room.
