Chapter 3: The Woman Everyone Had Already Blamed

By noon, the story had spread through the neighborhood.

Someone had vandalized a police cruiser.

Someone had deliberately left fingerprints.

Someone had apparently brought a child along.

And because Mara had been standing beside the cruiser that morning, the neighborhood had already begun constructing its own version of events.

Mara knew how quickly reputations could change.

She had lived in the community for fourteen years.

She knew which neighbors waved from their driveways and which ones watched from behind blinds.

By lunchtime, two people had stopped speaking to her.

One woman crossed the street when she saw Mara walking toward the mailbox.

Mara didn’t chase after her.

At her age, she had learned something difficult: defending yourself against every rumor could make the rumor stronger.

Instead, she went home.

On her kitchen counter sat a stack of HOA letters.

She stared at them for several minutes.

Then she opened the oldest one.

The first warning about her hydrangeas had been issued six weeks earlier.

The second had arrived three days later.

The third had included a threat of a fine.

But there was something Mara had noticed that no one else seemed to care about.

The letter contained a photograph of her property.

Someone had taken the photograph from inside her yard.

Not from the sidewalk.

Inside.

That had bothered her more than the fine.

She had reported it to the HOA.

They dismissed the concern.

Mara had assumed it was another petty neighborhood tactic.

Now she wasn’t so sure.

Her phone rang.

It was Reed.

“The camera footage has been copied,” he said.

“Did you identify him?”

“Not yet.”

“Was the child with him?”

“Yes.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“Then I know who that child might be.”

Reed said nothing.

“His name is Tyler. He’s my grandson.”

There was a pause.

“You have a grandson in the neighborhood?”

“He visits his mother. She lives two streets over.”

“Why would he be there at midnight?”

“I don’t know.”

Mara looked toward the window.

A dark SUV was parked across the street.

It had been there earlier that morning.

Now it was gone.

She lowered her voice.

“Officer Reed, someone has been watching my house.”

“Are you certain?”

“I’m certain enough.”

That afternoon, Reed reviewed the camera footage again.

This time he noticed the hooded man was not simply touching the cruiser.

He was looking at something.

A small black object had been attached beneath the rear bumper.

A tracker.

Reed called his supervisor.

Then he called Mara.

By evening, investigators had removed the device.

The tracker had been active for several days.

It had not been placed there because of the HOA dispute.

It had been placed there before the cruiser ever arrived.

That meant someone had been tracking the vehicle.

Mara’s accusation that morning suddenly looked less like an angry neighbor’s excuse and more like a warning.

But there was still one question Reed couldn’t answer.

Why had the person covered the cruiser in fingerprints?

The answer came from a small detail in the security footage.

The hooded man had stopped before leaving.

He had looked directly at the clubhouse camera.

Then he had lifted his hand.

His palm faced the lens.

He wanted to be seen.

Or, more precisely, he wanted Reed to believe he had been seen.

It was a performance.

Someone was trying to create evidence.

And Mara had unknowingly been placed in the middle of it.
