Chapter 2: The Woman Who Wouldn’t Leave
The fire was finally under control nearly forty minutes later.
The neighboring house was badly damaged, but everyone inside had made it out.
Daniel removed his helmet and wiped sweat from his forehead. His gear was darkened with soot, and the reflective stripes were streaked with water.
Karen was still there.
She had moved from the emergency line to the sidewalk in front of her house.
The wrench was gone, but her anger wasn’t.
When Daniel walked past, Karen stopped him.
“You could have moved the truck after the fire was under control.”
Daniel glanced toward the engine.
“We’re still checking for hot spots.”
“My driveway is still blocked.”
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
Daniel looked at her calmly.
“You were told several times to stay behind the line.”
Karen folded her arms.
“I never touched anything.”
“That isn’t the standard.”
Karen’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you don’t need to touch a piece of emergency equipment to interfere with an emergency operation.”
She opened her mouth, but Daniel continued.
“When a crew member has to stop working to watch a civilian with a tool near the truck, that attention comes away from the fire.”
That sentence stayed with her.
Not because she agreed.
Because she hated how reasonable it sounded.
By evening, the street was quiet again.
The damaged house sat dark behind yellow tape.
Karen stood in her kitchen looking through the window.
She could see firefighters loading equipment back onto the truck.
Then she noticed something else.
A small crowd had gathered near the neighbor’s lawn.
Her neighbor, Mrs. Evelyn Carter, was sitting on the curb wrapped in a blanket.
Karen knew Evelyn.
They had lived across the street from each other for eleven years.
They had exchanged Christmas cookies. They had complained about the same pothole. Once, during a winter storm, Evelyn had brought Karen groceries when Karen couldn’t get out.
Karen watched Evelyn staring at her damaged home.
For a moment, Karen considered crossing the street.
Then her phone rang.
It was Melissa.
“You’re home?”
“Yes.”
“Did you leave the firefighters alone?”
Karen sighed.
“I didn’t hurt anybody.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Karen looked back through the window.
“They blocked my driveway.”
Melissa was silent.
Then she said something Karen wasn’t expecting.
“Mom, you keep talking about your driveway. What if the firefighters were trying to save someone’s life?”
Karen stiffened.
“They were.”
“Then why are you still making this about the driveway?”
Karen had no answer.
She hung up.
The next morning, she found an official notice taped near the sidewalk.
The fire department had requested that residents attend a community meeting that evening.
The purpose was simple: review what happened, discuss emergency access, and address safety concerns.
Karen immediately decided she was going.
Not because she wanted to apologize.
She wanted to explain her side.
And she was certain everyone would hear it.
