Chapter 5: If You Were Watching

“If you were watching,” Margaret said, “why didn’t you stop me?”

David stared at her.

Officer Brooks remained silent for a moment.

The camera continued to record.

Margaret seemed to expect an answer from the machine itself.

Officer Brooks finally spoke.

“A camera isn’t there to stop you.”

Margaret’s eyes shifted toward him.

“Then what’s it there for?”

“To show what happened.”

Her expression tightened.

“That doesn’t prove what I intended.”

“No,” Officer Brooks said. “Your words and actions help explain that.”

Margaret looked away.

The saw remained on the pavement several feet behind her.

The artificial trunk stood beside the untouched oak.

Nothing had been cut.

Nothing had fallen.

No one had been hurt.

And yet the evidence of the encounter was already enough to make her original confidence disappear.

She had arrived believing that because she had not yet done anything irreversible, she could still control how the situation would be understood.

But intention did not need a damaged tree to become visible.

She had brought the prop.

She had approached the tree.

She had argued when challenged.

She had refused, for a time, to put the saw down.

And she had done all of it in front of a camera.

Margaret looked at David.

“You could have just talked to me.”

David answered, “You could have knocked on my door.”

That landed differently.

Neither raised a voice.

Neither needed to.

Margaret looked toward the oak.

Its branches moved gently above them.

The tree had never been the one fighting her.

She had made the confrontation about permission, pride and control.

Officer Brooks stepped toward the saw.

“I’m going to leave it where it is while you go.”

Margaret glanced at it.

For a moment, she looked as though she might argue again.

Instead, she nodded once.

She walked to her car.

At the door, she stopped.

She turned back toward the camera one final time.

This time, she did not speak.

She simply stared at it.

Then she got inside and drove away.

David remained on the porch.

Officer Brooks watched until the car disappeared down the street.

The mature oak stood exactly as it had before Margaret arrived—large, intact and untouched.

The camera remained fixed above the house.

Its purpose had never been to win a confrontation.

It had simply preserved the moment when a woman arrived believing she had the right to act, realized she was being watched, and discovered that the hardest thing to hide was not what she had done.

It was why she had come.
