Chapter 1: The Bang Beside the Fire Truck

The metallic BANG echoed down the quiet suburban street.

Captain Ryan had just started easing the fire truck past a row of neatly maintained homes when the passenger-side mirror suddenly jerked violently.

For half a second, he thought the truck had struck something.

Then he looked down.

Marla stood beside the truck.

The short red plastic yard marker was still in her hand.

The mirror hung crooked, vibrating on its arm.

Ryan braked immediately.

Marla took one quick step backward, then lifted her chin as though she had been the one struck.

“Your truck just hit me!”

Ryan stared at her through the windshield.

He had seen the entire thing.

The fire truck had been moving slowly, leaving plenty of room between itself and the parked cars. Marla had stepped toward the curb as it passed. Then, without warning, she had swung the red marker directly into the mirror.

Now she was pointing at the truck as if it had attacked her.

Ryan climbed down from the cab.

“You hit the mirror,” he said.

Marla’s face flushed deeper.

“I did not.”

Ryan looked at the red marker.

Then he looked at the mirror.

The two objects seemed to tell a different story than the woman standing between them.

“You were standing right there,” he said calmly. “I saw you.”

Marla stepped closer.

She was a heavyset woman in her late fifties, dressed in a bright red-and-yellow blouse beneath a yellow cardigan. Her oversized gold earrings swung as she jabbed a finger toward his chest.

“That truck came flying through here, scared me half to death, and now you’re acting like I’m some criminal.”

Ryan did not step backward.

He simply looked down at her hand.

The red marker slipped from her fingers.

It hit the pavement.

Clatter.

Something small broke away from it and landed beneath the fire truck.

Marla’s eyes dropped.

For the first time since the impact, she looked uncertain.

Ryan noticed.

So did a man standing across the street.

Marla moved her white sneaker over the tiny piece of red plastic.

“Maybe you broke that mirror before I ever touched it,” she said. “You’re only blaming me because you know nobody will believe a woman like me.”

Ryan’s expression tightened.

He pointed toward the ground.

“Don’t move your foot.”

Marla froze.

The street had gone strangely quiet.

And beneath her shoe was a piece of evidence neither of them could explain away.
