Chapter 1: The Hammer

It was a hot, humid afternoon in Willow Creek, a quiet townhouse community where most neighbors kept to themselves.

Frank Miller, a 72-year-old retired teacher, was in his front yard, coiling a garden hose after watering his flowers, when he noticed Karen Blake striding down the sidewalk with her familiar clipboard. As the self-appointed enforcer of the homeowners association, she prided herself on “keeping the neighborhood in line.”

Karen stopped in front of the red fire hydrant at the curb. She had complained about it before, claiming it “ruined the appearance” of the street.

This time, she wasn’t just complaining.

She raised a household hammer and declared, “This hydrant needs to come down!”

Before Frank could stop her, she swung the hammer with force.

The first two strikes rang out with sharp metallic clangs.

On the third blow, the metal cracked.

With a deafening burst, pressurized water exploded from the hydrant, soaking Karen from head to toe. She staggered backward, drenched, her hammer clattering onto the pavement.

Frank stood frozen, stunned.

Karen wiped water from her eyes, furious and humiliated, just as the distant wail of an emergency siren began to grow louder.
