Chapter 1: “Get That Hose Off My Property”
“HEY! GET THAT HOSE OFF MY PROPERTY—LOOK WHAT YOU’RE DOING TO MY LAWN!”
Karen’s voice cut through the roar of the fire.
A neighboring house was burning so fiercely that the daylight seemed orange around its edges. Thick black smoke rolled above the rooftops. Flames pushed through windows on the second floor while firefighters moved quickly across the street, dragging equipment into position.
A high-pressure hose ran along the edge of Karen’s carefully manicured front lawn.
Water sprayed across the grass.
To the firefighters, it was simply part of the emergency operation.
To Karen, it was an attack on her property.
She pointed at the wet lawn as if the soaked grass were the greatest disaster on the block.
“You’re flooding my yard to save their house—who gave you permission?”
Firefighter Daniel Brooks turned toward her.
He had spent enough years around emergencies to recognize anger that came from fear. But Karen’s anger seemed focused entirely on the grass beneath her shoes.
“Ma’am, step back,” he said firmly. “This is an active fire. We are not stopping.”
“I don’t care how big that fire is!” Karen snapped. “That’s my lawn, my property, and you’re destroying it!”
Daniel gestured toward the safety boundary.
“We’re protecting homes and people. Move back.”
Karen refused.
She remained just outside the operational zone, pointing and arguing while firefighters continued working around her.
Then something changed.
A firefighter near the burning house shouted for more water.
The flames had spread toward the side of the structure facing the next row of homes.
Daniel immediately turned away from Karen.
The hose needed to be repositioned.
Two firefighters pulled it farther across the street.
Karen stepped forward.
“Absolutely not!”
Daniel stopped and looked at her.
“This hose is going where we need it.”
“You’re not putting it through my yard!”
“We’re not asking you to move it.”
That answer made Karen even angrier.
She looked toward the burning house, then back at her lawn.
For several seconds, she seemed caught between the two.
Then she pointed at the wet grass.
“Who’s paying for my lawn when this is over?”
Daniel did not answer.
He simply turned back toward the fire.
And as the hose began delivering an even stronger stream of water, a second emergency vehicle came racing around the corner.
Its arrival changed the situation completely.
