The meeting was already underway when Thomas arrived.
Evelyn stayed beside him.
The old attorney, Charles Whitaker, was there.
So was Daniel.
And Marissa.
Thomas placed the original agreement on the table.
Charles looked at it.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he admitted the truth.
The final page had been replaced.
Years earlier, Thomas’s brother had discovered the alteration.
But instead of accusing the attorney publicly, he had confronted him privately.
Charles had threatened to expose Thomas’s brother’s financial troubles unless he stayed silent.
Thomas’s brother had agreed.
He had protected Thomas from the scandal, but the secret poisoned their relationship.
That explained the distance Thomas had never understood.
It explained why his brother had died believing Thomas would never forgive him.
And it explained the strange phone calls.
Patricia had found the original records after the law firm’s archives were being transferred.
The money had never belonged solely to Thomas’s brother.
It had been divided improperly.
The room fell silent.
Thomas looked at the attorney.
“You knew.”
Charles lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
The admission carried more weight than any argument.
But the story still wasn’t finished.
Daniel placed another document on the table.
The company’s board had discovered the same attorney’s involvement in several questionable property transactions.
Thomas’s division was not being eliminated because of his performance.
The company was restructuring to separate itself from the attorney’s business relationships.
Thomas had spent three days believing his career was ending.
Instead, he had been standing at the edge of a completely different reckoning.
Evelyn looked at her husband.
All afternoon she had believed the danger was another woman.
It had been a secret.
Just not the one she imagined.
Thomas took her hand.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes,” she said.
“You were right.”
Evelyn squeezed his fingers.
“Don’t make me right again.”
For the first time that day, he smiled.
Then Charles spoke.
“There is one more matter.”
Thomas’s smile disappeared.
Charles opened a folder.
Inside was a final document.
It carried Thomas’s brother’s signature.
And it named Evelyn.
