Chapter 4: The Call Nobody Expected
Evelyn stared at the number.
“That can’t be Daniel.”
“It isn’t.”
Thomas explained that his brother’s old phone number had been reassigned after his death.
Several months later, Thomas had begun receiving calls from it.
At first, he ignored them.
Then someone left a voicemail.
It was a woman.
She knew details about Thomas’s brother that only family members should have known.
Evelyn’s anger disappeared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Because I didn’t know what it meant.”
“What did she say?”
“She said my brother left something behind.”
Evelyn waited.
Thomas took a breath.
“She said it involved our father’s property.”
That was the secret he had been carrying.
Their father had died years earlier, leaving behind a small parcel of land that had eventually been sold. Thomas’s brother had always insisted the sale was legitimate.
But the mysterious caller claimed there had been an agreement hidden from the family.
Evelyn looked toward the hotel.
“So Marissa knows about this?”
“No.”
“Then why was she with you?”
“Because she works in corporate compliance. Daniel asked her to help me understand some documents before tonight’s meeting.”
Evelyn leaned back.
The pieces were beginning to fit.
But one piece still didn’t.
“Why save the number as ‘Don’t Answer’?”
Thomas looked embarrassed.
“Because I didn’t want to answer it.”
“That isn’t an explanation.”
“I was afraid.”
That admission stopped her.
Thomas had always been the steady one. The man who fixed broken appliances, handled difficult calls, and told everyone else not to worry.
Seeing fear in his face was unfamiliar.
Then his phone rang.
The screen showed the same number.
Neither of them moved.
It rang again.
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
She nodded.
“Answer it.”
He did.
A woman’s voice came through.
“Thomas? You need to listen carefully. Your brother didn’t tell you the whole story.”
Thomas stood.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who was there the night he signed the papers.”
The call ended.
Evelyn slowly rose beside him.
For the first time that afternoon, the hotel confrontation seemed like the smallest problem they had.
Because now the question wasn’t whether Thomas had betrayed Evelyn.
It was whether someone had been waiting for years to expose a secret buried inside their family.
